Anyone else prefer the heft of a steel j frame?

The actual "felt" difference between a loaded alloy-framed J-frame and a loaded steel one is slight at best.

Physics is physics.

You might be able to say that the recoil with the alloy frame is no more objectionable than with the steel frame, and that’s arguably the case with standard pressure .38 Special.

It’s harder to argue that with .38 +P, and it’s entirely dishonest to argue that with .357 Magnum loads in an alloy J magnum revolver versus a steel J magnum frame revolver.

I've got a square-but 36 and a 442. Can't say I prefer to carry the 36 over the 442, which has rubber grips. The 36 is more concealable. Both are fine

Pardon me for not being clear. My reference was to actual weight only.

I prefer steel. Sold a 642 when I bought a 36, followed by a 60.

I can handle a .38 J framed gun in a +P so I went lighter with a LCR no problems.

My 637 swallowed a Winchester Silvertip 110gr factory overload at the indoor range, and had no problems (other than I needed to ask the nice lady in the range to pound the case out with a dowel for me). That's a story from a couple of years ago. The gun was not damaged, and Winchester replaced all my ammo. For carry, with any 38 ammo, I still always trust my 60 and my 36 on my hip. If I'm dressed such that either would show, I have a Clip Grip on my 38 Airweight, with only Hornady Critical Defense short barrel in it. No holster, clipped over my belt, but in my pants, and I trust the ammo.

For pocket carry I prefer the heft of 11 rounds rather than five. As in Sig P365.

I can’t agree. The weight difference, loaded or not, between my 3” M37 and 3” M60 is substantial.

The loaded or unloaded weight difference between my six shot aluminum Cobra and M60 is also substantial.

On the other hand, the loaded weight difference between my seven shot L frame 386PD and M60 is not substantial.

Like "felt" recoil, "felt" weight is a relative term, different to different people. I never referred to "actual" weight. Certainly not a point worth arguing.

I used to find the heft of an all-steel Walther PPK/S reassuring, but the more I carried it, the more it would irritate me, so I compromised and bought a Ruger LCP. Same cartridge, same capacity, but substantially smaller and lighter. At first I felt suddenly as if I wasn't well armed, simply because I had come to associate that weight with being armed, but over time I have broken that association because it just wasn't logical.
The only way a gun being heavier is beneficial is when it helps to dampen recoil, (which it certainly did not on my straight-blowback PPK/S, in fact it actually had more recoil than the LCP) or if you plan on using it as a bludgeoning instrument.

Nowadays I carry an SW40VE during Wintertime, which weighs roughly as much as my old PPK/S, but holds twice the ammo and is chambered in a substantially more powerful cartridge, yet has less felt recoil.
In the Summertime I carry an M&P40 Shield, which weighs a few ounces less than the PPK/S, yet holds the same amount of rounds, and is substantially more powerful, with recoil which is roughly the same.

That being said, one of the most important facets of self-defense is self-confidence, so if carrying a heavier weapon makes you feel more confident, then it's much better than carrying something lighter than you just don't trust as much, even if it is just as powerful or even more so.

Pocket carry is the only method practical for me.
My primary choice is the model 38 airweight Bodyguard.
Practice with the model 49 steel frame version.

I have a 36 which I received for some work instead of $.
I asked the retired LEO if he ever shot someone with it.
Is answer was no, just knocked a few upside the head with it.

Steel, always steel.

Have had about a dozen S&W snubbies over the last 50 yards...most have been steel... Of the four alloy frame guns two had cracks under the barrel. No more for me...

The only two I have left are a 60-1 with adjustable sights and a 649-2 and plan on no more...

i have the Model 60-3 3" LS. Very happy with it.
125gr +P`s shoot very comfortably. No lock all steel fixed sight shoots straight

Given the same configuration, 3” J frame RB vs. 3” J frame RB, I can’t agree there is similar “felt weight.” It’s real, it’s substantial in ounces and pounds, it’s substantial in percentage.

The 3” M37 at ~16oz unloaded plus five rounds of 38spl at ~2.5 = ~18.5oz Vs. the ~23oz weight of a 3” M60 plus five rounds of the same 38spl = ~25.5 oz.

Just shy on a half pound or a 37% weight difference is very substantial and would be hard to ignore.

The seven shot AirLite L frame comparison is a better fit. ~19oz plus seven rounds of 38spl at ~3.5 oz = ~24.5oz. Only one ounce lighter than a loaded 3” M60.

I have 2-36ND’s, 2-60ND’s and a 60-15…I sense a trend here….lol

I do have my eye out for a nice 640 in .38Spl.
