I was looking to get a truck. I like the Nissan Frontier but Mrs Rule kind of vetoes the whole truck idea (I have only owned one) we usally get SUVs. Could get one if I want, but I do leave stuff in the back so then I would need a topper etc etc,

Sooo, I like the Xterra OK and as she says "more practical"

It is built on a truck platform so I can do all the heavy 4-wheeling here in Florida:D;) (Hey, we have sugar sand and mud)

Anyway, anyone have one, Good, Bad indifferent??

I want something with a truck platform not a crossover car chassis. (have one of those)

I have a model year 2000 made in '99. I bought it used in 2006 with 110,000 miles on it. I love it. Took it to Wyoming in 2007 during one of the worst blizzards in years and I have only SEEN snow less than a dozen times and I am sure the Xterra is the reason my son and I enjoyed the trip so well. (we each got a Buffalo and brought the meat home)

It is the reason I bought a new 2013 Altima and when the time comes to sell the old one will get another Xterra or Titan..Nissan makes good cars.

I own 2 frontiers .Both crew cabs 1 of them 4 wheel drive . I have owned a Nissan truck since 1986 . They have been good reliable trucks.

2005 Xterra - plenty of power(264 hp) rides like a truck but non-truck people find mine comfortable. Expect LOW gas mileage around 16mpg but if you try 22-24 on highway. It will go on most 4X4 trails and with small mods does them all.

Before the 1st gas crunch in 2006 I had a Dodge Dakota Quad Cab with the V8. Talk about lack of gas mileage!! It was a great truck with all the bells whistles, handling package, super tires, traction control etc. It would pass anything but a Gas Station.

The other vehicle I considered was the Toyota 4Runner but those a two fists full of DOLLARS!

Just traded in a 2009. They are big, heavy, strong, reliable and good looking, just like me.
I mostly decided that I needed better gas mileage and my rough road days were probably mostly behind me anyway.

I had one ...drove it 265,000 miles and sold it for $3000.00....It over heated once at 200 and somthing...replaced the thermostat.....

Second hand info FWIW:

My son owned one for about 2 years and sold it. He said ride and room were OK but gas mileage sucked and that was the primary reason he got rid of it.

Have 2: A Frontier (2005) Crew Crab: Excellent. Get 20 mph and it will pass just about anything. Crew cab so, I keep stuff inside or in a tool box.

have a Pathfinder (2000 or 2001)==lot less power but all the bells and whistles. Better mileage.

Don't regret buying either.

I had a 1986 (pre "hardbody") 2wd longbed I drove it 75-150K flawless...

I now have an 06 Titan 4X4.. (see gas pump comment...) I can get 11mpg if I baby it, but that truck will do ANYTHING.... it is a monster.... If i ever get rid of it, it will be replaced by a turbo diesel titan.....

I didnt realize that the Xterra was on the truck chassis.... i tend to ignore SUVs.... I am sold sold on Nissan, for everything except raw economy.... I am willing to trade raw economy for durability....

The only downside I had was the bodywork. It seemed thinner than a soda can. If I leaned against the car, it would bend very easily.

I bought a 2012 new and have had good luck so far. Got the cheap one with steel wheels, 2wd . It gets about 20+ mpg.The cheap plastic interior scratches pretty easy and the electronic throttle is a little touchy. Has a strong engine. Over all it's been good.

The "off road" version of the XTerra has received strong reviews on a consistent basis. As mentioned, low MPG is the trade off. I had a 1994 Pathfinder and put 100K on it with zero problems. My current 1997 Maxima has 170K and is still running strong (knock on wood). Nissan makes a fine vehicle, and if I was in the market for a 4x4, the Xterra would be top on my list.

I have a 2005 example, the first with the 264 hp 4.0 V6. It's frame is built like a brick outhouse. They used a shortened version of the fullsize Titan truck chassis. The frame rails are so deep that the only things lower than the rails are the wheels, mudflaps and the very bottom of the transfer case that has a guard on it. It goes like a scalded cat and drinks plenty of juice doing so. The ride is a bit gnarly as it has a leaf spring rear end. Want a cushier ride and better gas mileage? Get a Toyota 4Runner.

I've had an '01 xterra SE for 6 years. They are long on utility and short on comfort. it's been pretty reliable, putting 3k into head gaskets last year was the first major expense.

if you plan to drive over 2 hrs regularly, I would pick something else.

What happened ? Did it over heat ,how many miles?

If you plan on keeping it for a long time the 4Runner will hold its value better. ...much better, for resale. If you plan to use it till it falls apart either one is good

I've had pick-ups most of my life.
Decided to try an SUV (Pathfinder) a few years back - I kept it for almost 6 months before trading it on an F-250.
The first time you have to transport a dead skunk you'll wish you had gone with a pick-up truck :)

P.S. The 3/4 ton pick-up gets 20 mpg - 22 @ 60 mph (diesel) while the Pathfinder got 17 on a good day and 13 mpg on a trip to NOLA! (It was windy all the way though). AND the Ford will pull my travel trailer quite easily while when pulling a bass boat with the NissanI KNEW it was there....
