Anyone have an M&P 15 with a .22 conversion? Is this setup any good?

Okay, so I recently saw a .22 conversion for the AR-15 online for like $149. Apparently it just replaces the bolt?

I recently bought a 15-22 BEFORE reading the reviews first. Like I've stated before, I haven't had a problem with mine yet, but if one was on the fence between the .223 and the .22 model, wouldn't it be more beneficial to get the M&P 15 with the conversion? I'm all about reliability and I want to have trust that my gun will fire when I pull the trigger.

I'm not bashing the 15-22 at all. I guess I'm just trying to justify buying a AR.

I've got an atchisson conversion kit (.22lr) for my Colt AR15 (6530) about 20 years back. (I think Ciener makes them now) It just drops in the place of the bolt assembly. It works okay, but using anything other than the orginal metal conversion magazines (including blackdog metal mags) it does not feed reliably. Works peachy with the OE adapter mags, however.

That said, I still bought a 15-22 ;)

Magazine is different from the ones that came with my atchisson kit, but the bolt assembly looks the same. Probably work just fine.

Mine was a little finicky on cheap ammo for the first few hundred rounds, now it will shoot golden bombs all day long. Filthy little bastiches.

I've had the rimfire adapters and dedicated .22LR uppers. The M&P15-22 is better than any of them. Or will be, once S&W fixes the out of battery extractor problem.

The rimfire adapters work well on 1/12 twist M16A1 rifles. The M261 device was used for years for good indoor shooting. But 1/7 twist is very inaccurate.

Thanks for your response. I actually went over to the AR board for this topic and found my answer (which is pretty much what you just stated).

I guess i'll hang onto my lil' 15-22. The ONLY thing I wish I had now was the factory flash suppressor.. Maybe i'll have to drop belt fed a PM shortly ;)
