I'm curious about these. There seem to be a fair number of used ones flaoting around the market. Anyone ever use/carry one? They seem like solid members of the 3rd generation family. Am I wrong?

I had an early production, black finished 457. Very nice pistol.

The plus side: Light weight, accurate, easy to carry and fairly easy for a big guy to conceal. Reliable too. Eats everything.

The down side: Cheap finish that wears easily. Cheap plastic sights. Made to be carried alot....my frame wore pretty significantly from me shooting it alot (+500 rounds a month). Very little resale value.....and very little interest on the used market.

I'd advise you that if you can get one for $425 or less, do so. I'll probably pick up a stainless model 457 at some point and have Novaks put some decent sights on it. Good luck! Regards 18DAI.

I have a 457S that I bought in February and finally started to shoot it recently. I like the gun. In fact, I bought it with the intention of it being a bed side gun and I am now thinking about using it to replace my 3913 as my EDC. I figure I will shoot 50 rounds through it each month. I expect that the aluminum frame will get some wear from the kydex holsters that I use but that happens on my 3913 also.

If you want a light weight .45 from the S&W line-up there are not many choices if you don't want the rail. I would have paid more for a copy of my 3913 in .45 but that is not readily available. I wouldn't let wear to the finish issues stop me from buying the blued slide 457. I need a stainless model here in Florida because even stainless will rust here when carried close to the body.

From the S&W "value line" and IMO is a good value. As others have pointed out, doesn't have super quality/exotic features but is well made and dependable. Mine has digested everything I've ever run through it with nary a hiccup. Never been sorry since buying mine a year or so ago new for about $450 with 2 clips.

I regret selling mine a few years back in a pinch. It is on my short list if I run across a good buy. Slim, light weight, .45, good enough shooter. Good value.

Good, solid workhorse of a compact 3rd gen .45 pistol.

While it lacks the tighter frame and delayed unlocking of the 4513TSW, most shooters would probably be hard pressed to notice the lack of those extra features unless shooting the guns alongside each other, and maybe not even then.

I agree I like them better when fitting steel sights. (The plastic sights were the first thing to go on my original CS45.)

457

I owned a 457 for several months. It cycled well with all ammo. However,
it seemed to shoot low and I had to aim pretty high to bring up the point of impact. It was worth the money. I sold it to a friend and moved on to other 45 cal semi autos. My opinion is that it would make an excellent carry 45.

As pointed out by other posters, it is an economy gun.

Mine is a carry gun that I recently purchased on line. Prices are too high for 'em but they are a nice little gun. I have no intention of getting rid of mine.
