I'm assuming you'll be in SSP (stock production pistol). What you'll need is your pistol (duh), ammo (double duh), a holster,a 2 hole mag carrier, 3 mags if you have them, and some kind of concealment garment (most use a photo/fishing type vest). I'd suggest not going out and buying all this stuff. Go to your first match with what you already own, the people there will help you decide what and when you need stuff (plus you get to see if IDPA is for you before buying a bunch of stuff). Good luck and have fun. :D

I've shot it off and on but unfortunately my closest Ranges that shoot it are all 2-3 hours drive away. I've always enjoyed the shooting and have shot mostly my Wilson 1911 but have shot it a few times with a 9mm BHP as well as a 3" M-66 once.

If it was more convenient I think I could be hooked pretty quickly.

IDPA rules regarding reloading for an auto pistol are strange though. Counter to 98% of my Police training over 32 years. We only did a reload with mag retention towards the end of my career and it was only called for occasionally in certain practice scenarios. Same with the "reload behind cover" rule. Both somewhat strange and counter to a lot of years of training.

Worth a try though as it IS a learning experience and can be fun.

Agree with this post. I use a DW Vbob. CDP class. For a concealment garmet over my t-shirt, in the summer I use a short sleeved sport shirt, & a flannel shirt if the weather is cool. It has to cover your holster with your arms held horizontal to the ground. I take a few bottles of water and a snack as our matches have 6 stages and host about 50 - 75 shooters. It's about a 4 hour event. I am addicted. BTW 6 stages, 18 shots max each stage, 108 rds of ammo. I take 3 boxes of ammo.

I shoot IDPA every month if I can (sheep sometimes have other plans for me that day) Take plenty of water, a cover garment, if you are shooting a revolver like I do at least 3 loading devices, I shoot BUG (back up gun), with my 640 using 38 spl ammo and have a great time. Yeah, I'm not competitive on times compared to the semi-auto folks but I have fun and learn something every match. We shoot 6 stages about 120 rounds and occasionally have 2 gun or other not strictly IDPA stages that are also a lot of fun.

I started shooting IDPA back in 2008. I've used the same Glock 17, Safariland holster and Fobus dual mag holder since I started. I finally changed out the factory sights to fiber optic last year. I think that a Springfield XD will put you in ESP (Enhanced Service Pistol).

Im pretty sure that is the group for a XD (ssp) I plan on using my gun holster and mag holster that came with my XD. I picked up 3 extra mags for a total of (5).

I was looking at doing (BUG) with my SHIELD .40 too. I have to get a holster for it first.

Thanks for the info everyone.

I've been shooting IDPA for at least 10 yrs. ....favorite gun is my Glock 34, but I've tried all manner of revos and autos.

I also regularly shoot USPSA, ICORE and Steel Challenge. I'm not tribal about who I shoot with but many are. I just like shootin'.

Have fun and get better!!

Use to shoot it on a regular basis until the nearest match moved from 10 minutes away to 60/75.... hard to give up that much of a Sunday w/ two small/teenage boys at home.........bought a PC DPA 5906( an unfired safe Queen) just before I had to give it up.

Great fun......try to shoot "what you carry" as it's the point of IDPA vs USPSA run and gun.....LOL

The earlier comment about "tribal groups" struck me in the last couple of years.....but most of the shooters were friendly.

Just watch out for the "You aren't shooting a Glock?.....OMG!!!!!" group.

I carry a 3913 or PC 6906..... so cheating a little.... I started shooting a stock all steel 5906 ....... you would have thought I had shown up with a black powder Colt Dragoon......... oh the horror of an all steel pistol designed in the 1980s. LOL

I used my Glock 23 (.40) last year. Holster and mag pouches by Raven Concealment. Belt by Wilderness.

This year, I have switched to my (new) Colt 1911 .45 because it's much more enjoyable to shoot, and cheaper too since I can safely use cast lead in it. Holster and mag pouches by El Paso Saddlery. Belt also by El Paso Saddlery.

I've tried way too many guns, holsters and mag pouches. (Comp-Tac, Safariland, Galco, Mernickle, Simply Rugged, and more.) The ones I still have are the best that I've ever tried.

For cover garments I use some type of button up shirt, like a plaid or flannel woven shirt.

I got into IDPA this year. I use my Beretta 92FS, Galco Combat Master holster, double mag pouch with a Columbia vest as a cover garment. It is a lot of fun.

Great bunch of people to spend a Saturday with.

I'm happy with my accuracy, but man am I slow. I had a fellow shooter video me on my phone for a few stages and I look like I'm in slow motion moving between firing positions. I think that will get better with experience.

The August Match will be a BUG match, I'm torn between shooting the Shield 40 or my Model 60 revolver.

Definitely give it a try, bring what you've got an upgrade if you get into it.

I tried IDPA a couple of times. As a long service police officer, lots of their stages ands rules are counter to my training and real world experience. I didn't like the gamers, either. So I quit before I picked up any bad habits. Or punched some fanboi in the snooter. Lots of people have a ton of fun with IDPA, IPSC is even more of a ballet. Those guys can shoot fast, and hit what they shoot at, all right, but let something shoot back at them, like a full auto simunition machine.

Well, there is that. I shoot stages how I think I should.

For what its wort, the USPSA (basically IPSC in USA) reigning 3 time national champ used to be a cop.

Shoot the shooting games if you like em. Dont conform to gameyness if you dont like it. I shoot because its fun. Even IDPA with some of their ridiculous rules. :)

I've been shooting IDPA off and on for about 12-14 years now. I shoot a Springfield 1911A1 mostly, but occasionally switch to a 4" 586 just for S&G. Use my everyday carry gear.
The important thing is to go to that first match with the right attitude. Forget its competition, forget the gamers and don't pay too much attention to your times. Just go have fun and be safe. Then you can see where it goes from there. ;)

Since my last post in this thread I have 4 matches under my belt so far. Upgraded to a Comp-tek paddle holster. Picked up a tactical belt, extra mags for my XD40 Tactical (5 total) range bag from Midway and a tactical vest from LAPG.

After all of that I upgraded my gun to a XDm 5.25" competition .40. Ordered a Comp-tek Holster for that gun and extra XDm mags.

Having lots of fun with IDPA

Glad your enjoying it! :)

I don't get to shoot many matches because of work and school, but they are fun.

I use my carry gear, so compact .45 3rd gen with a IWB Kramer holster and a Safariland OWB double magazine carrier with two 7rd mags and the 3rd spare mag in my weak side pocket. I'm not going to win any matches, but I have fun.

I'm going to try my snubbie model 10 once I get some gear for it.
