I received a revolver a few years back. Along with the revolver was a letters of authenticity for the revolver. It was addressed to Mr John A Crawford. A little internet research it looks like he died in 2010 in Oregon. According to the letter the revolver was shipped to a store in New Jersey. I am looking for a little history of the revolver and in particular how it got from NJ to OR.

In this situation, usually the only way to get more information on an individual is a search of Social Security or obituary records. Absent speaking with a family member of the previous owner or something similar (such as it belonging to a famous/historical figure) it would be nearly impossible to document the travels of a particular gun.

John was a member of the S&WCA who as you know passed away over ten years ago. We were friends and he was a great collector who helped edit the first book Bob Radaker and I wrote on the 44 Magnum.

Many S&Ws started out in one part of the country and ended up in another. The path they traveled, while probably interesting, is usually impossible to define.

With the age of internet, guns crossing across the country are an everyday occurrence. I own a few that have crossed a few times over.

My 38/44 Outdoorsman originally sold and resided in California for over 75 years. Now it lives in Pa.

A 27-2 in nickel I think might have been a remember able gun for Mr Crawford.

I got the gun back in 2013, three or so years after Mr Crawford death. I thought about writing to his widow, but didn't want to disturb her. It looked like he was born a raised in the midwest and then moved to Oregon, never living on the east coast. That is how I wondered how he got a gun from NJ. Since he is referenced in the Standard Catalog of S&W I thought he might have had an interest in S&W guns and that someone might have known him. The gun does appear to have been fired although not much and the presentation case flocking was destroyed and the foam backing was in ok condition. It is nice gun for my small collection.

Dr. Crawford attended S&WCA meetings that are held annually in different parts of the U.S. Perhaps he purchased the gun at a meeting in Springfield, MA or Charleston, SC. Just a thought.
