That is a reasonable price yet somewhatt reliable? I don't have $100 or more to drop on one I will only be using maybe 3 times a year. Most of my shooting is with iron sights, but there is one place I shoot with a dot about 2-3 times a year. It will be for a 986 with light loads for steel shooting. Thanks for ideas in advance. Yes I'm cheap. LOL.

I've used a millet sp-1. It's a 3 moa. Not bad for $65.

My cheapo award goes to an amazon.com- heavy duty cqb red dot.......ive had it on a remington 870 12- gauge, an Ruger 10/22 and now on my mule revolver the 627. For $25!

Call me cheap too, but I'm practical also.

627 with heavy duty cqb. (It's discontinued but the truglo one looks the same. Mine was on a 12g.and a 10/22) $25. Cheapo award. I've replaced the battery 7 times and a screw fell out. Still works.

I have had a Millet SP-1 on a Ruger MKII for 12 years , bought a second about 7 years ago for a S&W Model 64 revolver . About 4 years ago I bought another for a Ruger 10/22 rifle. They ran about $60.00 and come with a tube extension , rings , lens caps and a battery.
I like the 3 min dot, black colored tube, 10 setting light intensity and long life. The price is right and they are a good unit, I bought 3 and am well pleased with them. You can still find them for around $60.00, I just checked amazon.
The last one , mounted on the 10/22 , took two clicks up and three clicks left to sight in...5 shots and we were sighted in !

I have a Tasco Pro-Point on my Ruger .45 Colt Bisley. Works great, and so far has held up fine for 100s of Ruger-only fire-breather loads.

Honestly, if you really don't plan to use it more than 2-3 times a year, just about any Chinese $35-75 red dot will be fine. The problem with cheap dot sights is that they mostly won't have repeatable/reliable adjustments,, the battery life sucks, and they won't hold up to recoil very well for long. On a 22LR you can get by longer of course.

I've been there/done that.

The Bushnell TRS-25 is okay--just make sure you get one of the ones with the offset 4/5 o'clock emitter. I don't think a 986 is going to recoil enough to hurt it.

I like the Bushnell TRS-25 so much I have 4 of them.
Best price I found $59.98:

Inexpensive reflex sights are available that would fit your use. Mounted on my 617 is a $53 green dot available on Amazon that works well. I also have one on my Ruger Blackhawk 357 Mag and it has held up well.

What brand is that on your 617, I have a Ruger Blackhawk also and the old eyes could use a $53.00 compact sight....I've got an Amazon gift card that needs using ....looks like just the ticket !
How does it mount to the Ruger ? Will need that part also.

The $53 green dot is called a Vector Optics Sphinx. There are complaints on it for turning off sometimes when the gun is fired. I figured that out when it started happening on one of mine. The battery in the underbelly of the sight has no cover and can wiggle around a bit with the recoil and momentarily loses power contact. My redneck solution was to put two layers of a small patch of masking tape on the bottom of the battery. That masking tape sits against the top of the mount and holds the battery against the + contact of the sight. That trick solved the problem with mine and two others in our club who have the same model sight. I have shot thousands of rounds since the tape trick and zero issues.

Here is an amazon link:

Here is a link to the Ruger mount I am using (note that is for "New Model" Blackhawks):

Thanks to all who have responded. I appreciate your help you are giving me. I have been looking on the net and my eyes are going in circles as i type this. Now, if I can make up my mind, all I need to do is find the best price. Hopefully I'll have one before I need it. LOL.
Thanks again.

Revolver ph ,
Many thanks for links and red neck battery solution , they are the best most of the time ! I got masking tape , duct tape , J-B Weld and WD40 the complete red neck fix for 99% of the problems we might encounter.
