Anyone still uses Zippo lighters?

I kind of do have a thing for the brass lighter used by Michael Caine in the movie "A shock to the System" made in 1990. Unfortunately I can't find any info about it...

"Close Cover Before Striking!"

...And if you did not have a match to light up, there were countless matchbooks on the ground EVERYWHERE! Rusty, add to that, it was in 1962 IIRC that strike anywhere matches became illegal in NYS. This was a bummer for us Boy Scouts. Our Scoutmasters showed us how to tie several strike anywheres together and dip them into hot wax. This was a handy waterproof means of lighting a fire in the outdoors, even if wet. Thus is society protected.

Have had a few Zippos, but the two left are my original from Japan 1955 (old standard) and my wife's 1963 marked 1963 PHT {put hubby thru) when I finished college. Stopped smoking 1975, but they hold many memories.

Vintage Zippo Lighter

I haven’t smoked for many years now but when I did I never used a Zippo. I found this one among my dad’s things when he passed away. My grandmother worked at this store in the 1960’s. The best Zippo lighter story I ever heard was told by my high school cross country couch in a YouTube video. He was being interviewed about his Marine Corp service in Vietnam Nam. He was a sergeant in his mid twenties in charge of 18-19 year old draftees. His men gave him a Zippo lighter for his birthday. The lighter was engraved with “Grandpa”. He cherished it for years. It lit many a Camel cigarette. When his dad died years later he put the lighter in his dad’s breast pocket before he was buried. He explained his reason: “That way I’ll always know where that lighter is”.

Great story, tough men back then, even though they were just kids. Crazy...

My bride gave me a Zippo, engraved with my initials, for the first Christmas we were married, in 1976. I quit smoking in 1983, and put the Zippo away. My sons (neither of whom has ever seen me smoke) will be surprised when they find it... :)

Recently got their High Polish Brass Vintage with Slashes model and I really like it. It reminds me somehow of my grand parents... :(

Even though I like old-school, I did put a double torch butane insert in it and I really love it. Perfect for EDC, classy too.

Put a little clip on Instagram. You should be able to see it w/o having an account.

I love Zippo lighters; they are a great American product. They just go through fuel fast, especially the slim models. The Zippo is my dress lighter, like a fine revolver or a 1911. When more long-term lighting is needed, I carry a Bic. The Bic is like a Glock: not as pretty, but it works.

I often use a Zippo to light my cigars, which some say is not correct. Apparently, the lighter fluid can be detrimental to the cigar's taste. I actually find that both cigarettes and cigars lit with a Zippo taste better. Besides, I've never had much luck with those expensive butane lighters.

This is the only Zippo I have left. I got it when I was assigned in Korea in 1972. My troops said they could always tell how PO'd I was by how fast I would click it in my pocket. I quit smoking 39 years ago and my Zippo now resides in my trophy case with other good memories.

Since I don't smoke and haven't smoked in 40 years I don't use them for that purpose but I have a small collection "just because" and I like to take one with me to poker games. All of these manually dexterous players riffling chips gets my attention. So I don't have that dexterity so I click a Zippo lighter opened and closed. Such a great sound and I know it has to be annoying and that's the whole idea!!! :D

I think my brother has our dads Zippo at his house. I don't smoke, Wendy does from time to time but it isn't a habit or addiction where it is a "got to have one" thing, she just likes the buzz of nicotine so she indulges at times. I tell her just get a big "chaw" and spit everywhere like Josey Wales. She just tells me "I can hurt you.". LOL
