Anyone try returning peeling stainless revolver to S&W?

Kernel Crittenden interpreted the original post exactly as I had - the OP was likely referring to the numerous threads and posts we have seen concerning the clear coat, or whatever S&W calls it, on its J Frame Airweight revolvers.

Only S&W can answer the question of whether they will refinish, and at what cost. That said, if they do it, the job they do will be first class.

Bare alloy is ok just wax it with carwax a few times a year. The silver clear coat is just paint of course it peals off with gun cleaner and holster wear. The barrel and cyl. Are stainless steel not painted alloy. The blk.442 is a anodized finish not paint, it wears better. But you have to keep the bluesteel cyl. And barrel oiled. I like the 442 better.

Had a 642 w this same issue. S&W sent me a label, refinished it for free, shipped it back. First class job. I understood that a range of SNs was bad, mine was in that, so it was gratis.

I was hoping for the same result but it seems like there stance on that was changed. polish job it is. And I'm not worried about the aluminum oxidizing. The gun will be a safe queen. Can't be any harder to maintain then my blued model 29.

The coating started coming off my Airweight. I soaked the frame in acetone and removed it all. Looks much better now.

Hi:
In the near past I have "Peeling Issues" with three different Model 42s. Smith and Wesson and after examining the revolver, replaced with a new gun.(after being FIRM) sent me a return label. They will inquire what cleaner you use. Hoppes #9 is a NO-NO for cleaning the airweights.
