I'm looking for something low and wide to store my handguns in. Currently, my long guns are in a gun safe, and my handguns are in fire safes used in offices. I'm thinking the Controlled Access Box will be more secure. It also uses the simplex lock that I like.

It seems to be billed as a safe to put within a safe, to keep certain items away from people you want to access the main safe. Does it offer the same protection as the Fort Knox pistol boxes? I have one of those and it is solid. I just don't know if the CAB is as tough and I don't want to spend $500 to find out.

No. Especially at that price. The Simplex push button lock is great. But I think you will find V-Line to be just as well built and much more economical.

Home - V-Line

I like V-Line. I have a V-Line Slide Away for my bedside safe. But V-Line doesn’t make anything like the CAB. And from what I see, they’re prices are pretty comparable to Fort Knox.

I use a Fort Knox, but it opens with a top lid and wasn’t nearly that expensive. I think I found the best deal on Amazon.

Yeah. I have a top opening one. It was around $300. The CAB is much larger so I guess that’s where the price comes from.

I own two Fort Knox vaults, and am most pleased with them. They both have electronic locks, and a standard finish. I did not wish to spend money on a fancy paint job, that only I would see. The quality is there, without a fancy paint job. One has long guns on the left and shelves on the top and right. The other is narrower and has only shelves in it. I store guns in the larger safe, and other valuable items in the other. I have never had a problem of any type with either, and in my estimation they are the finest made. Both are decades old. I wonder if safes made these days are the quality that these are. I am not familiar with the lock box mentioned, but if Fort Knox makes it, I would not hesitate to buy it should the need arise.
