I am thinking about getting one of these, now that you can keep
your old number.

Any pros and cons?

thanks for your time.

I don't know anything about Magic Jack. But unless something has changed the phone number trip is one-way. While they say you can take your old phone number with you, if you switch back to the phone company they won't let you take your number back with you.

That's the way it was several years ago with companies like Vonage and various cable companies.

Magic Jack Plus

I have had one for 9 months now, and really like it, kept my old number and told cox communication to take their bill and eat it, I a,so have a fax hooked to it and that works fine also. Next thing for me is a internet hot spot and tell cox to take a hike on internet also

After reading some reviews about magic jack and their billing practices, I decided to go with Vonage, cheaper than Verizon, ultra dependable and the technology is the most stable.

Sounds too good to be true to me. I've reduced my home phone to the bare minimum and it is now cheaper that the post discount rate on vonage. I still use AT&T. Any time my bill goes up I always get it fixed. You just have to find the right person to deal with.

Have had Vonage for 6+ years and like it, thought Magic Jack+ would be a cheaper alternative. Took them up on the free 30 day trial with a new number, (kept Vonage with the old number) worked as well as Vonage (which is great!) on short calls, but on call that exceeded 8-10 minutes (wife-daughter) the call would drop out. Tried Magic Jacks "tech support" online chat from India or Pakistan I think. Never found a solution, returned it within the 30 days was never billed.

Try the 30 trial, if it works, then its a good deal for you. Don't switch numbers untill you are sure it will work for you.

When I first heard about MJ I thought it was too good to be true. However, it worked as advertised. Call anywhere for as long as I wanted, crystal clear, plus it had real good message center software. I plugged it into a cordless phone base station which served a couple phones in the house. After two years I didn't renew MJ because our cell phone plan is such that minutes are not an issue. When my cell phone is not within reach I just use Google Phone via computer for free (outbound calls only).
