Title says it all.I just bought an M&P45 with a terrible trigger pull.I asked the gunsmith about an Apex kit of some sort but he suggested he just work on the factory trigger.
Any thoughts on pros or cons of either option would be appreciated.

Pros and cons? Easy.

Cons:
Gunsmith hourly rates of $60-$70 +/-?
Modifying the factory parts, which can't be undone.

>>OR<<

Pros:
You can get a whole Apex kit on Amazon right now for $79.98 with free shipping.
You'd have it by the middle of the week, and could install it yourself in less than 1/2 hour.

No permanent modifications to your gun, and you don't have to be without your new gun for two to three weeks (or however long your gunsmith's backlog is).

I have the same exact gun and did the FSS APEX Trigger Kit. It's a very noticeable difference. Well worth the money. I did it myself in about 35 minutes and I'm NOT A GUNSMITH. NO MORE gritty trigger. Very crisp break, but the trigger pull still seems a little heavier than I'd expect but that'll get better with time. Still wayyy better than factory. (SILVER Spring) Overall it's a great upgrade. Definately worth the money

Your gunsmith can smooth up the action, but to shorten the pre and post travel, that can only be done with an Apex FSS kit. Depends on what you want.

APEX all the way. Get the FSS kit with APEX trigger. Proved, tried and tested, don't let some clown loose on your gun :)

And the third option is...

Sending it to the Performance Center for their Master Action Job. Both of the previously discussed options have liability issues associated with them that factory work does not. Now this is not a problem for a lot of folks but if the gun is being used for self defense and you are ever involved in a shooting, then this may (probably will) become an issue. I've had the Master Action Job done on all my M&Ps (45 and 9) and have been extremely pleased with the results. The Apex kits I've tried on other guns are no better.

Did you buy the gun new? The reason I ask is.... If it is older (built before mid-2010), it might have a smaller diameter sear spring and plunger. If so, you will need to replace the sear housing block with an updated version to be compatible with the Apex FSS. I have an M&P 9mm, older style, with the manual thumb safety and want to install the FSS and trigger kit. Finding someone who sells and has the proper sear housing block in stock has been difficult to say the least!

TIE

I've done a handfull of M&P trigger jobs using the burwell method

and I've got an APEX in my 5" pro

they are about the same.

I think my Burwell is a bit smoother, but the APEX take-up is lighter, due to the replacement springs.

My question - is the gun new? If so, 200 rounds and it will smooth out. In the other hand, there were some really bad triggers that got loose so it's an "either-or" situation. If you're going to carry the pistol CCW /SD, the I'd give factory/warranty first consideration. A range/competetion gun, then Apex...
