Apollo 11 - 40 Years from the Moon

it's hard to believe that it's been 40 years since Man first set foot on the Moon....

No, what's hard to believe is the lack of manned exploration since we landed on the moon. I, for one, think it is disgraceful that after the moon, manned exploration essentially came to a stand still.

Well, Bob...don't you remember we used up all the money eradicating poverty, disease, and war, and what-not.

We coulda built condos on Mars for everybody here with the bailout cash.

IMO it never happened. 20% of the population believe this as well. too many inconsistencies in the movie, if you cant make it fake it type deal, so we "got there" one way or another.

NASA recently released a photo of part of the lander that was taken by a recent fly by of some imaging device. Of course it's small and hard to see what it is, but I don't doubt they made it to the moon.

30 years ago I was a driver for a limousine company, I drove Neal Armstrong to Philadelphia Airport. Not very personable, didn't say a word to me.
Too many people saw the Space Race as just that-a race. We beat the Soviets to the Moon, we won. That was that.

I met him at a party once and asked him how he made it to the moon if there is no air in space...he said he held his breath the entire time...so now I'm not so sure he actually went.

You've got to be kidding!

Movie? Maybe you should meet Buzz Aldrin and tell him personally.

Well, it DID happen. Conspiracy theories............. No use for 'em.

The Discovery Channel "Mythbusters" did a pretty good job of debunking the myth of the faked moon landing. If you ever catch it, it was a good episode. Neil Armstrong has never exploited the experience for personal gain - he could have made millions in personal appearances and such. There is an article in todays Washington Post about Armstrong and how, even 40 years later, he is a reluctant celebrity. Even though that is his personal decision, the experience is larger than just him in light of its historical significance. He must have forgotten: "A giant leap for mankind". Come on Neil, tell us about it, we will never go there. Mankind wants to know about the experience. Were you packing any heat?

I was 13 and on a family camping vacation. We were at Kitty Hawk Nat'l Monument when Armstrong stepped out and onto the surface. The Park Service set up TV's so we all could watch. It was surreal. being where manned flight began only 66 years earlier and watching men on the moon. I'll never forget that.....

Oh, and i was packing a Mattel M-16....

We went to the moon............and hopefully someday we will return there

I still remember sitting on the floor of our living room watching it on a RCA black and white TV with rabbit ears.
what's sad is they left their Hassleblad cameras on the surface. Man, what I'd give for one of those!

They went, still have the news paper clips from it. They want a space station, so build it on the moon.

maybe since then but not in the 60's. and maybe he doesnt want the fame and fortune cause he knows he doesnt deserve it, just saying, he cant elaborate on stuff if he wasnt there. cant face that many people and lie to them like that. just a thought as to why he might be that way, mad at himself for going through with it.

well lets get crazy and say mythbusters was payed off and in on the whole thing, in a last ditch effort to convince the skeptics (nasa emplyees, etc). personally i have no clue i could go either way on the subject.
Well, it DID happen.
sooo you were there?

Well of course Mythbusters "confirmed" the landing was real.
Do you actually think they would come out and say it was a hoax.

Besides, who did Mythbusters go to for all their information for their show. That's right, NASA.
Do you think they would offer up any info to disprove the landing? Nope.

I was fifteen at the time and was just enthralled with the whole thing. Now as for the people thinking the moon landing was a hoax, do they have any idea how many people it took to pull off the moon landing? If you have more than one person envolved you cannot keep a secret!

Moon

That Mythbuster episode was on last night. I shoulda checked the Discovery website when I posted yesterday, it would have been easy enough. Whatever your perspective, it was entertaining - that's why it is on. Considering that my Ipod has more computing power than the lunar module did in 1969 it is a wonder - considering current technology - that we made it in '69. I was twelve in 1969 and was glued to the TV. I still have the newspapers of that first landing. Special effects labs today could produce an entire faked landing anywhere right from a computer. But, like the feeble computing power of the LEM in 1969, we did not have that special effects technology in '69 either. In those days, making a phony landing probably would have cost what the real one did or more, and they still had to launch a Saturn 5 and recover a splashed down Apollo capsule to make it look "real". Not to mention the thousands of people you'd have to pay off or kill to keep quiet about the fakery. What's the point? Just go there for real, it is easier.

Nobody loves a good conspiracy theory more than me, but c'mon now.

I believe that if we managed to take some of these fake landing fans on a guided tour of Tranquility Base they'd only come back and say they must have been given LSD and post hypnotic suggestions.

i like how nasa told mythbusters that the real "moon sand" was scarce so here is this "fake" moon sand??? and are you trying to say we had the technology to GO to the moon but not enough to fake it, do me a favor and say that out loud real quick, listen carefully. just cause a billion people were involved doesnt make it any harder to hide the truth, as soon as that thing was out of our sight the only people who needed to know is the people on board and and the people/person behind the fake. let all the people at mission control think they really are on the moon. america is conspiracy happy but you really have to be now, just cause im paranoid doesnt mean people arent out to get me, ill leave you with that. (no i dont really think people are out to get me)

Full Moon

Funny, I just checked the calendar and the next full moon isn't until August 6th.

I have a hard time believing that we could pull the wool over the eyes of the Russians. They had a pretty nifty space program, too and no doubt they were tracking the spacecraft the entire time.

No one had more desire to prove it was faked than the competition and 40 years later they still seem to be okay with our claims.

with the technology of a current day digital watch, yeah nothing could have slipped by that. not saying i believe or dont believe but i do like to not rule anything out till there is proof. and by proof i dont mean someone telling me "believe me it happened". i really would like to believe people but everybody lies, im just hoping people look into things and stop takin other peoples word for it, i mean there is evidence to suppot BOTH sides here, and if you are denying that well, good for you. also im not bound by a full moon, like normal crazies. lmao

For me, the Moon hoax crowd merely reinforces the idea that most conspiracy theories are a form of mental illness. Here is a great website run by Phil Plait, a physicist and astronomer who refutes the Moon landing conspiracy nuts point by point:

Phil Plait's Bad Astronomy: Bad TV

Yes, the landings happened folks.

I've really enjoyed seeing the coverage of this event and the rekindling of some of the national pride we felt 40 years ago. We live near Kennedy Space Center and it's been disappointing to see the interest and pride fade away. This year has been especially bad with the shuttle winding down and the Annointed One overseas apologizing for the country. Where's the pride we used to have?

Here's a shot of the Thunderbirds during NASA's 50th Anniversary at KSC. We went down that day and it was nice to be amoung a group of people who were "proud to be an American". They even had an Air Force First Sergeant sing the National Anthym without all the artistic crap. Lots of salutes there and all stood. Cool day!

Was I there? You bet! Sitting of the living room floor watching the whole thing.

Like I said, Conspiracy theorists........... got no use for 'em!

exactly, not in the space craft, you COULD have been watching a movie? im simply stating there is a SLIGHT possibility its fake, look at ALL facts. and please realize the government does occasionally lie to the masses, all im sayin.:D maybe we did go but i cant believe it just cause YOU say it happened, fact is you were not (physically) there.

Well heck, I wasn't in Massachusetts when S&W made my Model 28-2 but for some darn reason it's right here and I actually believe those lyin' scoundrels made this gun.

Geesh...some of us will go to great extremes to "prove" their so called points even if only to try to shade the obvious. Life is full of opportunities to have a little faith...I guess I'm just a sheeple with no ability to see the "obvious".

I'm guessing since I was in KC when the towel-heads hit the Towers that was faked too?

Brother.
