Just picked up a beautiful bright-blue 30-1 from Gunbroker with a 2" pinned barrel, and I'm wondering if it's old enough that I should put it in my C&R bound book. SN is 780372. It came with a hard Crimson Trace laser grip, but the original matching number diamond Magnas were included. (Yay!)

As I say, it's a lovely little piece, with no scratches anywhere and only a hint of bluing wear on the sharpest edge of the muzzle and the front corner of the yoke hinge. It has a turn line on the cylinder you can imagine is there if you squint hard with the light at just the right angle. You can tell it has been fired, but not much.

I got it for $550 with no box or papers and could probably sell the laser grip for ~$100. I'll shoot it with 32 Longs first, but will probably pay Big Cholla to ream the cylinder to H&R Magnum, which ends up costing $100 with postage. (That lets me use the same ammo in all my 32s.) I'll probably keep the Bucheimer Perfect Fit holster for a while, just to see if it's ever useful, although I doubt it will be.

I never should have fired that first 32, as this is getting expensive. I'm thinking it may be time to cut down on the 38 snubbies just to make room for the new kids.

Anyway, any advice on age will be appreciated.

I'd put the wood grips on it and leave it alone.

Cant help with the date, but I have a pre model 30 someone said dates back to around 1957. Mines an I frame.

Someone give me the approx. muzzle energy of an H&R Mag from one of these beauties. If it's reasonable (Personal protection), I'm going to watch for one.

Thanks for that link, wood714. Looks like mine is probably late 1968, judging by the numbers in post #4. Not quite 50 years old, so not a C&R gun.

The Buffalo Bore 32 Mag 100g JHP +P load averages 1100fps out of my 2" 432PD. An online energy calculator (at Bullet Energy Calculator | Ballistics101.com) says that's 269 ft/lbs. For comparison, Remington's 38 Special "FBI Load", a +P 158g lead HP, averages 820fps out of my 2" Model 49, which calculates to 236 ft/lbs of energy.

Despite the greater energy, I find the alloy 432 is more comfortable to shoot than the steel 49 with these two loads. (Not that I can afford to shoot many of the Buffalo Bores, at $1.30/shot.) I shoot the 32s more accurately than the 38s, too.

I also have a 31-1 that has been reamed to take the longer H&R Mag round. The Buffalo Bore +P load averages 1234fps out of the 3" barrel of that gun, which produces 338 ft/lbs of energy. Buffalo Bore advised me that that +P load is safe for unlimited firing in a J frame reamed from 32 Long to 32 H&R Mag.
