Hello
I have been seeking a good price on a AR 15. I have been looking for a couple of months now. Several people told me to hold off for a while, so I did.
It appears that the price on these are dropping. Even the manufacturer web sites are posting sale prices. Just maybe, the supply and demand thing is kicking in.
Can anyone tell me what happened to the prices of AR's during the late 80's weapon ban, and then later.
I was not into AR's at that time, and am curious. Does anyone agree that holding off on a purchase of one would be a good thing to do?
Any information would be appreciated.

The Ban was a different time. There is no ban at the moment, so one assumes supply will meet demand and the prices will fall. They have not fallen back to pre-election prices yet. I purchased a Colt 6920 the week before the election for $1200 and they are not back to that level yet.

Take into account today's shooting, the killing of the abortion doctor, democratic House/Senate/President and there may be a ban on the horizon. If you wait until there is a ban, the prices will be through the roof.

It is a gamble either way.

ARs weren't banned in the 1980s. Ones with certain features - bayonet lugs, collapsible stocks, flash hiders - were "banned" from '94 to 2004 for non LE customers. Gimped ARs with fixed stocks, no muzzle devices and no bayonet lugs were plentiful.

You paid a premium of about 400 to 500 dollars for the "banned" features in many cases.

Anyway, going rate right now on a 6920 is about 1500, that's down from 1800 to 1900 but more than the 1200-1300. Still... 1500ish isn't bad. If you can get one for less than that, then that's a good deal.

CDNN usually seems to have CMMGs, a decent make, in stock for about 900. That's about what they were selling for. I wouldn't hesitate to get a CMMG. If you want an M4 clone and can't spring for a Colt or other gold standard type gun, then that might be the way to go.

Thanks for the information - that is great. Very good information.

Go check out AR15.com. Lots of good info over there. I think some of those guys sleep with their AR's!

Lots of good info, but a pretty high signal:noise ratio. Lots of subforums.

I just got into ARs in the past year and built my first one. Nothing fancy, it's a DCM match-legal rifle. Accurate. Fun to shoot.

Sadly, I'm in a ban state, so those "evil" features are still illegal here. Too many drive-by bayonettings. A "pre-ban" receiver (pre 1994) generally goes triple what a post-ban does, since you can have the scary features on a pre-ban rifle.

This a Colt/CMMG hybrid. Colt upper, bolt, barrel, internals on a CMMG lower. The flash hider is permanently attached on the 14.5" bbl to bring it up over 16" and avoid a tax stamp. The lower was about 150ish I think? The rest I traded a Century FAL clone for.

CMMG with similar features that I tweaked a bit. So evil it has its very own Amish quilt as I like to say. Base gun is very similar to what 900 bucks buys from CDNN.

Transitional Colt SP2 AR15. Has mostly A2 features - heavy 1:7 barrel, etc, but has A1 sights. Made for about two years in the early/mid 80s. Rifles as opposed to M4 clones have fallen out of favor a bit, so sometimes you can find a bargain, even on older Colts. I used to have an SP1, which was also a relative bargain since they hold a steady value as of late.

Everyone's favorite non AR, but sort of like an AR - the Sig 556. I over paid, trading a Colt SP1 and a USP .45 for this one. They'll cost more than a 6920 or 6940 Colt, but if you want a gas piston gun to play with, might be an option.

I also have an unbuilt complete RRA lower that I'll make into another A2 or A3 styled rifle at some point. Once you have one complete rifle, you can "grandfather" your complete lowers in about 60 seconds just by attaching a complete upper from another rifle.

Thanks for the replies.
You mean people actually sleep with their AR's or Smiths?
GatorFarmer - those are some nice rifles.
I just want one, well maybe 2.

Not literally WITH them ... but there's usually one or the other within arm's reach. :)

If you get one, you'll want a second. And a third. And so on. They're like any other gun, except they're nearly infinitely customizable. Yeah, you can swap uppers around, but it's more fun to build up lots of complete rifles.

I finished my first and I'm already trying to figure out how to [strike]pay for[/strike] build up a carbine next.

Great to know. Wild Alaska has a excellent (and very long) reputation. He's been around as long as I have been surfing. If he has it, it is at a very competitive price and his service level is among the best.

Potthawg,

Can you please provide more contact and product information? I've been thinking of getting into the AR field, and my son is finally getting interested in long guns, so this might be a good time to take the plunge. Your help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards.

Dave

I've had a Bushmaster DCM competition AR15 I've had for about ten years. It's got the Bushmaster "comp" trigger, not the White and it has been excellent.

Today, the word I hear on the street that the Rock River ARs are the best bang for the buck.

If and when I get another, I think it will probably be a Rock River, M4 carbine type rifle...possibly flat top.

I've had mine for almost a year. Couldn't be more pleased with it. Amazingly accurate for a 16" barrel. The trigger is really good right out of the box.
