I have $400 Fathers Day bucks to spend. Looking at three options. 1) get two Vortex Strikefire or Sparc red dots, 2) Eotech 512, 3) ATN X-sight 3-12x night vision scope +$200.

Opinions? Other options?

Hmmm, what are your top two uses for the weapon? Benching, competition, "reach out and touch someone", CQB?

Agree + depends how old your eyes are as well. I have the Eotech but needed a 3X multiplier for more accurate groups even at 50 yards. Here's where my mind is - Eotech for non-precision close work and scope (you pick the magnification) on a quick detach quality mount for 100 and beyond. Nice Father's Day gift - good luck!

My suggestion is to first decide what kind of an optic you want for the type of shooting you'll be doing. You've got 1x red dot and 3-12x magnified optic as choices which are entire different. It's like asking if you should get a 4x4 truck or passenger car.

Once you decide what kind of optic will best meet the need, then comes the time to decide the specific brand and model.

If you have the money a quality 1-8x scope. If not then a quality 1-6x or 1-4x scope. Personally I use a 3-9x and canted BUIS. I shoot from 15 yrds to 300 yrds.

I recently installed a few year old 1.5-4.5x Nikon Monarch on one of my ARs. Absolutely love how versatile it is, especially since the scope and rings cost me about $100 total.

You can purchase one of the newer AR scopes that go from 1-6x power. Will cover everything from 5 yards to 300+ yards no problem.

Well said, I would follow this advise.

Plinking at a distance, home defense, or gound hogs at 100 yds,?

Respectfully, you have $400 dollars in your pocket. Use it with a future goal in mind. Don't be a kid in a candy store because I have already been there. You will get good answers on this forum so take your time in your decision.

For the uses you have in mind, my suggestion is Burris AR-332 (3X32mm) or AR-536(5X36mm). Think they are about $300-$375, 2MOA dot w/bullet drop comp. out to 600 yds. 5 settings red/green and black etched glass. I got one a few years back and never regretted it.

Excellent suggestions from y'all. There's two things I want to cover. Hog hunting at night and daytime plinking with a bumpfire. I have a red dot/laser combo right now with a green light that attaches to the bottom of my quad rail on my AR15 and a big *** scope on my AR10. A buddy of mine is recommending a green laser designator with a scope.
