Does anyone here own an 'AR47' or know much about them? I am considering building/buying a 7.62x39 upper to go with a lower I will be building.

From my understanding this setup can be problematic. There are extended firing pins and stronger hammer springs available to help with the harder primers.

I guess I am basically looking for any first hand insight any may have on how to make this 'hybrid' work reliably! Complete upper or parts suggestions?

I am aware of the 300 blackout but at almost a dollar a round, I cannot justify it.

Thanks!

I am in the process of building my own, too. I got the last piece of the upper puzzle Friday, but haven't yet had time to put it together, let alone function testing. I did decide to go with an adjustable gas block; otherwise, it will be a pretty stock AR carbine.

Reload. ;) The .300 BLK setup will be far cheaper and simpler for the same ballistics, (unaltered lower, same magazines as 5.56mm, same magazine carriers, easy repair parts, etc.) while maintaining the option of adding new uppers for other calibers if desired.

Car to shed any more light on the upper build? I was considering buying a complete upper from radical firearms.

Got 3 currently. Ones a pistol. Red X stuff has been good. Enhanced firing pin is a must. Other than that mine have been fine.
Use ASC or C Products mags only.

The upper consists of a KaK (nitride"value line") 16" carbine length gas system barrel, an Aero upper receiver w/generic parts kit, a Chinese knock off of an 15" NSR handguard, and an SLR Sentry 7 adjustable gas block. I bought a BCG from AIM, nitride.

A pre-built upper would have been cheaper. I started buying parts a few months ago with the intention of building it as cheaply as possible, but ended up buying some more expensive parts (e.g. the barrel was $110, and the gas block was nearly as much).

I have a Bushmaster in 7.62x39 that shoots just fine. Stay away from steel cased ammo, mine does not cycle well at all with the steel cased stuff. I stick with the brass cased Yugo 7.62x39. I'm aware of the problems
some people have had with AR's in 7.62x39, but in over a thousand rounds, I haven't had any issues.

7.62x39 upper

I have a Del-Ton upper from 7-8 years ago. Didn`t run at first but got the upper receiver switched to M4 style and had the ramps smoothed out and feeding problems went away. Seemed to short-stroke on some under powered brass cased MFS I bought fairly cheap from Cabelas as I had acquired some Dillon reloading parts and wanted the brass cases. I drilled the gas port with a 5/64th bit and that eliminated short stroking...don`t know what size the port is supposed to be but it seemed to clean up some rough spots in the port. All the American made brass cased ammo works well as well as the aforementioned Eastern Bloc(corrosive) ammo. I have an LMT bolt and it has never failed with brass cased ammo(including my reloads)after the fixes I mentioned. I`ve recently experimented with steel case ammo and Tula is practically impossible to fire, even with the extended firing pin. So is Golden Tiger. Wolf Military Classic shoots well with only a few fail to ignite primers.

Forgot to mention... I also use C Products and ASC mags. Had a few problems with the earlier C Products but they replaced them rapidly and no other problems since.

Bought an upper on sale from Midway, use CS mags, It just works with all ammo including steel cased. I have been very happy with it.

Had a Colt Sporter for years. MAGAZINES back then were THE issue. Now you have the ASC and C-Products which seem to work well.

I liked mine as at the time x39 ammo was DIRT cheap...not so much now. I can see little advantage to such a rig now with ammo prices so high. But with proper hunting ammo they are basically a .30-30 semi auto. Many a young kid killed his first deer with my Colt. Works just like a M-94 on deer. Would work well on pigs too.

I've got an AK-74 and a very nice LWRC upper in 5.45x39. When my ten cases of Russian ammo gets used up, both will go down the road.

.223 is so much easier to deal with.

Thanks for the responses guys.

Any preference between the two?

I am envious of you who have this figured out and working. I di 3 over a 3 year period starting 10 or so years ago. Never got one to work 100%. The firing pin issue was the first problem but the mag problem never got sorted out. Lookin back, maybe I was a little too soon to the well. It seems like it was popular enough that some good folks got involved and sorted it out. As for the Blackout, it solves the .30 want but the ballistics are no better than a .357 mag. Once the Blackout is removed from the magazine fed rifle it doesn't offer much. A single shot rifle or a lever carbine in .357 will shoot the light and heavier bullets faster. Glad you guys got that AR 7.62 working though, it feels great in your hands.

Complete 7" PSA upper w/ BCG on a PSA MOE lower, runs like top with C-Products mags. Easy, no fuss, cheap build (plus stamp). I run it with an AAC Brakeout 2.0 FH and with or without my AAC 762SDN6 without problems. Only change I made from the factory was putting in an H2 buffer and Sprinco blue spring.

Had a heavy barreled (a little over 1 inch in diameter) 7.62X39 AR 7 or 8 years ago. Shot great and was a tack driver out to 100+ yards with good quality ammo. Never could get magazines that were dependable that would feed over 5 rounds without a jam. Sold it off and let someone else worry about it. Glad to hear the new magazines work like they are supposed to.

Just finished one with an Anderson (IIRC) lower, some generic lower parts kit and an AR Stoner complete upper from Midway. AR Stoner mags. Took it to the range this week & put 60 rds through it with no hiccups. 50 rds were Yugo surplus brass ammo, 10 were MFS brass commercial.
