I just acquired a Model 41 with the field barrel that was manufactured in 1959. The barrel has a (crudely stamped) serial number matching the frame. The numbers on the barrel are stamped individually and are not in line. Is a this standard factory marking, or added by a previous owner?

I have only seen a few barrels serial numbered to the gun, and would think it was the owner somewhere down the line not wanting to get things mixed up.

I should have stated that the serial number that is stamped on my barrel is on the underside of the barrel extension. The numbers appear to have been stamped prior to the barrel being originally blued.

I'm sure nobody in there right frame of mind would stamp the barrel anywhere but the bottom, or where it would be covered up. As mentioned there are a few barrels that had a number single number on the bottom, this also could have been a request by a customer when ordering the gun.

My 1960 5 digit 7 3/8ths Mod 41 is also stamped on the underside of the barrel with the serial number. It is neatly done crossways directly behind the underlug.

Some "Team" bbls were marked on the left side near chamber - usually 4 digets (generally small and uneven). Some US Govt bbls, slides, and frames were marked with their own series in addition to the std S&W SN stamping - in "out of view" positions.
