I'm using my cable tv provider for Internet. I've been watching less tv and watching more videos on the internet.

In doing so, I've discovered just how intermittent my internet service really is.

Giving serious consideration to dumping cable provider.

Any suggestions? Or warnings?

BTW I'm in 8 hours into a "2 more hour" outage. Grrrrtrt

Well i can tell you that Fios uses fiber optic so you get a very clean signal, whereas Comcast does not and you actually share your bandwidth with your neighbors. If they're away your fine, however if they're online as well the whole neighborhood slows down to a crawl. Most smart phone providers offer internet service but are maxed out by so much service each month. Extra service means extra expense on your part.. There are some that offer unlimited internet access, but you need to do some research. Remember you'll never get as fast of a connection on WIFI as you'll get with a straight wired connection to your cable provider.

It all depends on what your local options are. My choices are Comcast and telephone company DSL.
I have Comcast. I just ran a speed test on my IPad on wifi.
I got 25.9 Mbps download and 6.06 Mbps upload.
Ping was 13ms. Telephone Company DSL here is not that fast.
I can pay Comcast more money and get more speed but I don't want to pay more money.
So what of speed do you guys have?

I've got the option of fiber optic EPB here, or Comcast/Xfinity. I've had Comcast for close 20 years. No gripes and no plans to switch. 30mbps Internet and expanded digital HD TV. $99/mo including DVR plus $7 for each additional digital box. There was a guy at BestBuy who was selling DirectTV. He asked to compare plans but was not competitive.

We live out in the country, and there is exactly one that serves our area. Cable TV is not offered here, so for TV it's either DirecTV or DISH. When we moved here, we had to get on a waiting list to get DSL, so we got satellite internet for the interim...which was only marginally better than dial up. Then CenturyLink (what it is now...originally it was Embark, or part of Sprint, I think) finally had an opening, and we got DSL. Ours has been very good, with few interruptions.

Wish my internet speed was half that fast. We can't get Comcast where we are or I would switch in a heartbeat. My Dish TV is out every time we get a good cloud cover or a shower. Aggravating as all.

Telephone Company DSL here is not that fast.

My Telco offers "fiber to the node/neighborhood" DSL which is faster than regular DSL. My tested download speed is a little over 13 Mbps, which is fast enough for the way that I used the Internet.

The Telco claims that service of "up to 40 Mbps" is available to some customers. I guess it depends on how close your house is to the end of the fiber.

It has (knock on wood) been extremely reliable.
