May become a flatlander again.......Any Wisconsin Residents out there??

Missouri is a mostly conservative state, gun-friendly state with lower taxes than most other states.
If you avoid the Boot Heel in SE MO and a few other areas you won't have to live in flat, boring areas.
True. The Ozarks are beautiful. Not really what a lot of people think of as mountains so much as BIG hills, but not flat and boring either.

This great country has an amazing variety of terrain that is for sure!

As a Navy brat I have lived in many states from both coasts to the heart of TN and several places in between.

I would stay where I am at here in Salmon Idaho if I could make a living and own my home without a mortgage, but that is not in the cards.

The goal here is to be closer to family, so I will have to make NE Wisconsin work somehow. Unless.....by some miracle the home prices north of us in Ravalli County, MT come back to realistic prices by summer.

As mentioned, I will be able to come back and stay at my good friends ranch to hunt/fish as long as I am physically able to make the trip which will hopefully be many years.

Lived in Michigan since birth and NEVER had a single issue buying, selling, or owning guns. There is NO pistol registration requirement in MI and unless you are a conspiracy theorist, no registration for long guns either. Only a couple cities/counties that have local laws requiring registration but I do not think anyone abides by those requirements and there is no list of what they are??

Purchasing guns require a 4473 which is BATF and a CPL will not need an FFL. A handgun adds a Pistol Purchase Permit. Both these forms stay with local businesses for 4473 and with local law enforcement for a PPP. Overall cost of living in WI is higher than the UP and I would rather be a Yooper than a Cheesehead!

You are right, the U.P. is Gods country and some place special.

my wife grew up in iron Mountain and we definitely think both the upper peninsula and Wisconsin have beautiful country. That that's not an argument at all.
If it wasn't for the gun laws in Michigan, I would certainly consider living there again

Hey Gary, unfortunately Dickinson County in the upper Peninsula, where my wife's family lives does require you to bring in a list of all Hand guns including serial numbers for their county registration

And they also have a permit to purchase requirement

I'm sure people ignore it but it's not worth the risk for me so we will continue to look in Northeast Wisconsin for a possible place

That said if we do end up in the area, it would be fantastic to meet up and visit!

I just do not understand how a county can go against state and federal laws? I have a feeling if anybody cared living down there that these regulations could be overturned. I understand how states can go rogue like MA, NY, WA, CA, etc. without consequences, but not counties. Time gun owners take over the County Board and change the rules.

. . . and by the way, Northern UP from Munising to the Keweenaw to the WI border is not flatland.

If I didn't live here, I'd be in Montana.

Our first choice is Ravalli County MT just south of the liberal town of Missoula but housing prices are way out of reach at this time.....unless a mobile home on a 1/4 acre next to a landfill for $500K is attractive to you.......

I guess folks in Dickinson county are not concerned with restrictions/regulations on firearms.....

Although not ideal, we may end up living with a family member in that area for a time so we can do some in person research rather than depend on online sources. Not easy to buy land/homes long distance!!

As a MO resident with a BIL who has a cattle ranch in the Ozarks I would add heat, humidity, ticks, and mosquitos to a MO summer.

And chiggers too - don't forget chiggers.

On my last visit to the SE Ozarks a couple of years ago I made the mistake of wading a couple of hundred feet through a field of tall weeds while wearing cargo shorts.

The little buggers nearly ate the skin off my legs from the knees down. Took nearly a month for it to heal up.

**UPDATE**

After giving up on purchasing a property north of us in the Hamilton Montana area due to real estate being ridiculously high we ended up purchasing a home on just under three acres close to the towns of Pound and Coleman off of Highway 141 about an hour north of Green Bay Wisconsin.

The property is the last part of land that has been owned by the same family since 1866 so we are the 2nd owners. They sold off the major part of their property gradually over the years and this is the final piece with a house and outbuildings.

The property has a 4 bedroom home with a full DRY basement, a very large barn/storage building, another small garage and yet another shed on 2.7 acres and our purchase price is $315,000

For that amount of money you would not be able to purchase a 2 bedroom 1 bath single level home with NO garage on a 1/4 acre lot in the Hamilton, MT area.

Glad I'll be able to make an annual migration back to Salmon Idaho to hunt/fish or I would probably go nuts.....but we will find new things to do and with Green Bay and Lake Michigan close bye I may just end up getting another boat!

Stay tuned, I have a pile of "HARDWARE" to move not to mention all the household stuff!!

If memory serves, you're fairly to some of the nicest trout streams in the state. Not to mention Lake Michigan

Congratulations on finding what you want. I recently saw that Montana was 3rd in the US at the top of home prices to wages, trailing only Hawaii and California. I really wondor where my offspring are headed.

Looks like a great place. Good luck on your move, that's something I would dread, after being in the same place so many years.

And might give some consideration to planting some more wind break perimeter. There's likely some straight line wind hitting ya in winter, as what is known as "frozen tundra" part of state.

Nice place Tom!
Now you'll have to start to slowly increase your intake of beer and cheese so you'll be acclimated prior to the move!
Congrats!

More of a whiskey and cigar guy rather than beer and cheese.....but I may have to adapt a bit to blend with the locals, LOL!!

What part of the U.P. are you in? Wife grew up in Iron Mountain and we have family up in Houghton/Marquette area.

We lived in Prescott Valley, AZ for 6 years which is wide open country and known as the "Land of the leaning trees" due to the winds.......

The original barn was partially destroyed by a tornado in 1968 according to the tornado tracking records that I found.....it was the only one that hit that spot since they started keeping records.

A wind break may certainly be a good thing to do.
