I want a another 4" 617 but I was hoping they will make one without lock...Any word if this is going to happen? Figured since the 442/642 have been without locks, it maybe possible.

I was thoroughly convinced that S&W would never again make a no-lock 642 when I bought mine last year. I needed a conceal-carry gun so I went ahead and bought it with the intention of removing the lock (which I have done). I would like to get the 627 and the 629 but since they are not models that I need, I will wait until S&W offers them without the lock. Maybe this will never happen as long as the lock versions are selling, but, we can hope?

Good luck tractor (and welcome to the forum!)

It took me quite a while to find a 4" bbl.pre-lock 617-4 10-shot. I paid a premium for it, but it was worth the wait. Be diligent, and check the classified here and elswhere. They do occasionaly pop up.

I had been looking for a pre-lock 617 for quite a while and finally found a 617-1 4 inch pre-lock at a gunshow about 2 months ago, and like Wheelgunner840, I had to pay a little more than I had hoped to, but you don't see LNIB ones everyday. I was happy to find it. I doubt that you will see new production 617 no-locks in the future, but-------you never know!

WHEELGUNNER840 THANKS FOR THE WELCOME,

I have a lock 617 and owned a few 617's in the past without lokcks but were 6" barrels and didnt like them once i got the 4"..

Ill keep an eye out but as my boys ge older I want them to have a few key firearms for each of them those being an
AR15 & 617 revolver for each boy..

Anytoher guns they want will have to come out of their own pocket.. Becuase I am to selfish to buy them anything else and 3 boys it adds up quick..

Sounds like you are a GREAT Dad! Nothing selfish about passing down 617s and AR-15s!!!

Now, we know what the 3 boys are getting. What are you gonna give your daughter when she shows up?

Ahh I am hoping for a 4th kiddo, and want it to be a girl..Wife says I would make a better girl father than boy father..So she will get a pink funriture Ar15 and I will have to paint or buy some pink rubber grips for her 617..

Perfect! Wouldn't it be a hoot if she can outshoot all the boys! Good luck on getting a little girl to come into your family. Boys are great, but there is something to be said for Daddies little girl!

Yet they make thousands of "evil" black semi autos every month without any lock in the same political climate.

Here you go, give you some perspective on what they look like. Also made with RB gripframe.

Look hard enough and you might find one without the dreaded underlugg....

Good luck on your search, the good news is that they made non-lock guns for more years than they've made lock versions.

the older 617 do not have locks..........if you dont like the hole, then get an older model

The lock is a non-issue with a 617, unless you simply cannot live with that hole. We are talking about a gun that will be used for target use in most cases. The newer renditions have cylinders that are manufactured on CNC mills and are as good as you can get as to mechanical accuracy. That said, I do have a 617 no dash 6 shooter with the 8 and 3/8" barrel that will shoot like a good rimfire rifle off of the bags.

It will be easier and cheaper to find a couple of good Dan Wesson 22's and they will not have locks and will out shoot the 617 easily. They have interchangable barrels upt to 10" in length, and can be completely disassembled and reassembled in just a couple of minutes by your boys they are so simple. But they are built like tanks and the frame size is close to N frame S&W.

Here is my model 722 (SS 22LR) wearing the 8" barrel, I also have a 6" barrel.

Here is my model 15 (blued 357) disassembled for detailed cleaning.
