Are you related to historical figures?

My uncle almost got a shot at the title of Heavyweight Champion of the world. 2 times.
He was a boxer back in the 30's when Joe Louis was the champion. My uncle Hank Bath was in two elimination tournaments where the winner fought Louis. He got second in both of them.

With a last name like Jones, you can bet I claim a lot of illustrious forebears. Not the least is the country singing legend Cousin George. There are quite a few pro football players: Vikings WR Hassan, Dallas RB Felix. Two nicknamed "Deacon" are in the pro Football Hall of Fame. (Rams defensive lineman Dave, and Ed "Deacon" Jones, center and manager for the 1911 Dover Blues, never inducted, but he is in the team picture, really.)

Last but not least is the legendary hooper Basketball Jones.

There aren't as many Joneses in this world as you might think. We got to stick together.

I am a direct descendent of a man who was part of the British contingent that fought the French at Fort William Henry in Lake George, NY (the big fort used as the backdrop for Last of the Mohicans, the battle itself was real). One of my relatives was married to Abraham Snay, the last surviving member of the Union troops that surrounded and killed John Wilkes Boothe in Dr. Mudd's barn.

On my dad's side, to Lt. Presley O'Bannon, USMC:

Presley O'Bannon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Presley Neville O’Bannon (1776 – September 12, 1850) was an officer in the United States Marine Corps, famous for his exploits in the First Barbary War. In recognition of his bravery, he was presented a sword for his part in attempting to restore Prince Hamet Karamanli to his throne at Tripoli. This sword became the model for the Mameluke Sword adopted in 1825 for Marine Corps officers and which is part of the dress uniform even today."

Which I always thought was pretty cool. :)

My maternal Great Grandmother was related ( first cousins) to both Frank and Jesse James as well as Bob Ford the killer of Jesse James. She was a James that married a Ford. My oldest Brother is into genealogy and has the roots traced back into the 1600s. It makes for some very interesting reading.

By any chance did the research turn up a Sarah McCutchon (spelling may be off)?

She is an ancestor of mine and I'm supposed to be related to the James brothers through her. Also to Richard Nixon!

My family thinks we are related to John Billington from the Mayflower, my mom is working to confirm this. He was the first settler to be executed in Plymouth in 1630. :) His son accidently discharged a musket near a open barrel of gunpowder on the Mayflower during the boat ride over here. Things sure would have turned out different if the Mayflower would have blown up.

John Billington - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Billingtons were known as the troublemakers on the voyage and in the colony.

John the elder was noted for clashing with Myles Standish numerous times, and was eventually hanged in 1630 for killing John Newcomen.

The son, Francis, was the one who fired the musket on board the Mayflower. The vessel was anchored in Cape Cod Bay, off present Provincetown. Francis also "discovered" the Billington Sea, the large lake west of Plymouth.
Francis married Christian Eaton in 1634 (?), thereby starting a long family line under that name, also.

Elinor, John's wife, was sentenced, in 1636, to the stocks and a whipping, for slander of John Doane.

There's a Billington Street that runs from Plymouth to the lake.

A supposed painting of John Billington and a contemporary image of his final moments on this mortal coil.

My cousin did family geneology on my mothers side. Grandfather's family got her into the DAR french military connection. Grandmother's side related to General Hood. I don't brag about this when visiting Atlanta. Family resemblance in the eyes for sure. Sherman ruined his day.
It looses ground on my fathers side. Irish from Newark New Jersey. We receieved an inquiry once from a geneoligist wanting to know if my ancestor from Ireland was a horse thief.

No famous people in my Father's line, they were mostly farmers. My GGGGGrandfather did fight in the Battle of Ninety Six in South Carolina during the Revolutionary War, on our side of course. I've traced him to being born in 1756 in New Jersey and moving to Virginia. After the War he settled in South Carolina

mother's line is traced back much further and there are a couple of people who were Knighted back in medieval times.

I'm related to a gentleman named Archibald Hamilton who was a major in the Continental Army of George Washington. He was the son of a Scots/Irish couple who came to this country (before it was a country) from Belfast Ireland. This would be on my mothers side of the family.

Given the fact that there are so many generations between me and this guy I could be related to darn near anyone. My grandmothers maiden name was James. The family goes back in TX to almost statehood. KY, NC and VA before that. It might be best if I just don't know. ;)

It boggles my mind.
