If I'm going to hump an N frame, it's going to be one with a caliber starting with a .4.
Now if it was a new 8 shot .357, that would be different. But if limited to 6 rounds, why not make them on the large size?

Show me the error in my thinking.

I can almost agree. I have a few N frames but only 3 of them are 357. I really like my 24s. Take that 28 and trade it for a L frame.

Some things to consider:

A 686 with a 4" barrel weighs 42 oz
A 28 with a 4" barrel weighs 41 oz

A 686 with a 6" barrel weighs 46 oz
A 28 with a 6" barrel weighs 44 oz

What were you saying about weight? Remember that full lug barrel adds weight.

Show me another gun that has as much "working man's" class as your 28-2 and I might start to agree.

I won't part with the 28, but it probably won't get into my carry rotation.
Actually already have a 386 NG. Great light carry gun. And I get an extra round.:)

I see no fault to your thinking - if you prefer the big-bores, go for it!

I've found a happy place with the medium-bores myself. I've carried one of those 8-shooters you mention (a 627 Pro Series) and it rocked. Right now my warm-and-fuzzies handgun-wise are from a 5-inch 27-2 (now stocked with Kurac Cokes, not pictured).

Get one & carry 'em both---that way you have a choice and you will be well balanced in your thinking.
I said that and endorse the post.
Blessings

I've been wearing my 4" M28-2 in my Lobo IWB holster all day. Totally comfortable, and I literally forget it's there. I have my M340PD in my left front pants pocket so I have a .357 Magnum available to either hand at all times.
I'm going out in about an hour to conduct a surveillance. Will be in the car for 4 or 5 hours. It will be completely comfortable, and I feel VERY well-armed.

I fully agree with the OP.

Packing a N frame in .357 instead of .44 mag is like packing a full size 1911 in 9mm instead of .45.

Call me crazy but I have no use for the six shot N frame .357.

I have a M66-1 2 1/2 inch that I load with 158 grain hard-cast semi-wadcutters to about 1200 fps.

In a totally "no-frills", "boil-it-down", revolver situation it's weight and power will preclude any other S&W .357 Magnum of any other size and weight.

But that would be akin to watching only movies with Catherine Zeta-Jones when there are so many choices, not that she's a bad "un".

I have owned several 28s in 4 inch and 6 inch that I have sold or traded away. I think they are too much gun for 357. I have an L frame for them and I own some N frames starting with a 4.

I've been humping a 329, before that it was all about the 4" 629
Read that has, 26oz instead of 41oz
Its a no brainer

I got authorization to carry my 28-2 and wore it on duty for 10 years, until we were transitioned to the Beretta 96. I'm 6'5" and well over 200 lbs., and I never found it that difficult to carry. It's still in my possession and won't go anywhere while I'm drawing breath. BTW we didn't have the option of anything other that a .38/.357 and I certainly never felt under gunned with it.

Take care...
