As the Holidays approach, which charities do you give to?

This year all of my charitable giving will go to Wounded Warriors, with the exception of change I drop in the Salvation Army pot.

Mainly the USO, then Salvation Army and the Wounded Warriors. My wife works, for no pay, for a local charity, Friends of Karen who help families with sick children.

My Sunday school class supports an apartment for battered and abuse women and children. We purchase items for the current residents for a better Thanksgiving and Christmas.

My church is working hard to give 5 church members families items for Thanksgiving and Christmas. We will give the church extra cash to assist with this task.

My family selects a child from the Salvation Army Angle Tree. Today, the girl we selected was asking for a winter coat (size 4), cap, gloves and a scarf. Not a doll, an electronic game, or a bicycle. Many thoughts are running through my head, thinking of this child. She is asking for a need, not a want. The child cannot be older than 5. What is her life like? Does she know happiness?

Oh well, sorry to stray from the original question. But is makes me thankful for what we have and thankful we can try and make someones life a little brighter

You know, as Federal employees who spend a fair amount of time away from home, one thing we did was collect the little bottles of shampoo, soaps, lotions, pens that hotel rooms are stocked with. We have a big basket in the lunch room (we have several agencies co-located in one building) and we put them in there. When the basket is full, we take them to the battered women's shelter and donate them.

I listened to Tom Gresham today on Gun Talk. He had a real heated discussion with the Chairman of Wounded Warriors. They won't give Tom permission to use their logo even with donations. Since they won't take donations from gun groups I won't give them any more donations either. I give to Shriners Hospitals, Salvation Army, Local charities & others.

I try to be charitable all year long as much as I can, and in any way that I can. I don't go out of my way to try to be "more" helpful around the holidays.
Whether I donate goods or money, or even just my time, I try to be helpful no matter what the season is.

Salvation Army, St. Jude & Shriners childrens hosps. D.A.V. VFW, American legion, Army relief fund, Marine Corps "toys for tots", Local animal shelter, USO.

I used to give to "Wounded Warriors project" until a local talk show host said they will not take donations from gun mfg.'s . I checked their website, it's true. OK they don't need any from me either. It's not like they are the only group who support the troops. There are lots of other org.'s that do.

We try to support local charities. Our school has a fund for homeless students that provides for things like back packs, caps and gowns, and sports equipment for kids that stay in school.

On a state level, we support MI-COPS. They offer support to spouses and children of Police Officers that are killed in the line of duty.

Usually the week of Christmas I'll just see somebody that looks like life has dealt them a bad hand and give them a $10 bill. I always watch to see that their first move isn't towards the liquor store but I'm usually a good judge of the right folks. I'll drop some in the Salvation Army kettle too.

The last organization in the world I would donate to is the Salvation Army. Their agenda discriminates against certain people.
It's the Soldiers, Sailors and Marine fund for me every year without fail.

Great thread idea...thanks!

I have everything I need, and can buy almost anything (within reason, of course) that I want. Therefore, for many years, I have asked family and friends not to give me gifts for Christmas, and to donate to charities instead.

My favorites...

The DAV

The VFW

Boys Town

The Global Medical Relief Fund

Doctors Without Borders

The Helping Up Mission (in Baltimore)

The WBAL Radio Kids Campaign (also local to Baltimore)

Toys for Tots

Wounded Warriors and to local food pantry. My son's home base is in WA, he's in Aphganastan , but they have Christmas fund to help the families so we will help there also.

My church receives an offering every week, because we want to in the spirit of giving to others. I have given money during the year to members who have posted "threads of interest". I believe the poster is identifying a real, legitimate need in someone's life that is deserving of my help. Others with an immediate need that are identified on the Forum, I try to help. An innocent, unenexpected gift of kindness that make life a little better. The recipient wasn't expecting it, I can remain anonymous, and I feel better because I know I made a difference.

Annie and her puppies is one example. http://smith-wessonforum.com/lounge...ate-post-59-great-news-about-dog-we-took.html

True to the teaching given in Mathew 6:1-4.

Thanks to all who also follow.

The only charities we donate to are Gifts for Yanks and the American Legion Child Welfare Foundation. We give to our Church but I don't really consider that a charity.
