Although Washington state, at times seems to be quite liberal when it comes to gun laws, last year a bill was submitted for consideration in the legislature regarding assault rifle registration.
The bill, first would require all non-registered assault rifle to be registered. The bill also includes a paragraph detailing the right for local authorities to search assault rifle owner's homes. The search is to inspect and guarantee owners are keeping their assault rifles under lock and key.
The bill also gives LE the authority to confiscate the assault rifle if not duly kept. The law thus opens the door for LE to request proof of registration/ownership of any weapon they find during the search.
This bill has been approved to go to the floor for vote as of Jan. 3, 2014. The bill did not disappear as so many legislators assumed it would. Even the person sponsoring the bill did not know how or when the search of home got written into the bill.
However the new proposed bill did have the "search of home" removed, it is scary that some legislators jump on a band wagon limiting our rights without reading the proposal line for line. The new law is asking for all assault rifles to be registered not just ones being purchased as of date. In conjunction, the proposed bill is outlawing any magazine that holds more than ten rounds.
Unfortunately, what these legislators still don't understand is that a person with intent to commit a crime does not care about the laws. In the past, during previously outlawed magazine size, the black market (found at most street corners or allies) offered up most extended sized magazines for a premium. Which meant, the black marketeers got rich, the buy got poorer until the committed more robberies to gain more wealth at the harm of law abiding citizens.
Will legislators ever get it?
