At 55yo I became disabled. That was 2005. My doctor wanted me to retire in 1993, I didn't listen I was dumb. I fooled the company that I was in pain till 2005. I tried not to let the pain show. I wanted to build up my s/s. But I'm 67yo now. I should of retired in 1993.

I would still rather be working. My mom lived till 92yo, old age, my dad lived till 72yo lung cancer from smoking. I just need more time with the grandson.

My circumstances were a bit different. I was in a motor vehicle accident when I was 49 that left me disabled. That was in May. I walked back into work in September with a high degree of difficulty. I put in two years after the accident, but in the second year I was almost bowled over by students in the hallway four times. My greatest fear was that my mangled leg with the implant would be broken and I would lose the leg. With that motivation, I decided to retire. Since retirement, I have had 17 corrective surgeries, all of which tended to provide some relief, but the last 3 did the most good.

Honestly, mentally I was not prepared to retire, but it was the best decision.

I retired in January 2015 after serving 36 1/2 years as a Police Officer. I was 56 yrs old. Absolutely no regrets, in fact I should have retired at 35 yrs of service because the pension was the same. You will know when it's time to leave.....I didn't retire to be employed again, in fact I'm not interested in the least to ever "work" again. I enjoy basically doing whatever the hell I want to do. The days (and years) have flown by. It certainly helps to have a supportive spouse that understands. If you are able to retire and be financially secure then do yourself a favour and do it.

Age 59. The day, month, year, hour and minute I could first retire with all the benefits the State of Florida would pay me. Not one second longer.

Don't get me wrong, I loved my job, made surprisingly good money, had great benefits, a great boss, great friends and great support and would do that part of my life over in a heartbeat if it was possible to do so.

But I knew I had some health problems and never, ever expected to live another ten years, wanted to relax, spend some time with friends, my wife, get in some travel and play shooting games for a while before it was time to "leave."

I just passed the ten year mark the 30th of last month, and am still here doing those same things, though some health problems have sorta sprung up again.

I have had a great retirement and when it ends (whether tomorrow or many years from now), I have absolutely no reason to complain.

I retired at age 48 in Aug 2013. I work part time at a gun store/indoor shooting range just for something to do and a little revolver $
