Attacked by Pitbull.. What would you do?

Bang! End of story.

Several years ago we had a member of my wife's family attacked and killed by a Rottie. So, I agree with Ron. If he crosses my property line in an aggressive manner the day is not going to end well for him.

But, I agree with several previous posts. Since you didn't shoot him this time, file a police report ASAP and get the dog's aggressive nature on record.

Have you done that ?

It is an important thing
If it did attack two people it may already be on a watch if that incident was reported.

The next time it may not be you or your dog but a little kid.

2 of our kids have been bitten (no serious injury) by two different neighbor dogs on their property but since it was partially the kids' fault I cannot me mad.

Now, if the dogs would come onto my property and attack our kids the dogs just made a fatal mistake.

I don't believe the dog felt threatened by the gun with the safety enabled they know the difference between the safety on and off.

I copied this statement and highlighted it so others could see just how ridiculous it is.

Dogs know the difference between the safety on and off? Really? Amazing, the things I've learned hanging out on an Internet forum.

I saw that too and thought the same thing. So what if the gun doesn't have a safety?

I think this was meant as a joke and you guys took it too serious ;)

My advice would be;
Call the police and file a report.
Call your landlord, and tell him her and her dog are still there, ask him to call the police.
Call the police the next time you see the dog on your property, and tell them that you feel the dog is a danger and you want it removed from your property immediately and permanently by whatever means necessary, refer to your prior police report as evidence.
If the dog attacks you again on your own property, kill it.

Personally, I would have shot the dog immediately the first time, you showed remarkable restraint. I have a friend who's son has permanent facial scars from a rottweiler attack as a toddler, so vicious dogs get no leeway from me.

As far as spray, it apparently usually works against dogs, but don't count on it working for sure, especially if the dog has a strong fighting drive or goes into a frenzy like pits do.

"Initially the dog had a good bite, but upon the first hit of spray the dog went into even a more intense fight with the suspect. Nearly half the canister was delivered before the dog was called off. The dog had received numerous shots in the eyes and nose areas during the apprehension and still the dog chose to stay in the fight. It was obvious that the dog was under a lot of discomfort. His eyes were shut tightly, but his bite never did relax."

What do you consider a vicious dog? I've been bit by a black lab and a ****zu.

I consider a vicious dog to be one that attacks unprovoked.
A lab, pit, or a ****zhu, I would do my best to see a dog put down if it attacked someone unprovoked and caused significant harm, whether by someone else, or myself if it is in my legal power to do so.
I don't tolerate vicious dogs. A small dog that bites is no exception. A vicious dog is no better than a rabid raccoon imo. Just another uncontrolled, feral animal. The owners that for the most part make them that way or allows them to be that way are the ones at fault.

Oh yeah - dogs know!
In fact, they can tell if you have a Smith, a Ruger or a Glock!
What they can't tell yet is if you have a round in the chamber....but they're working on it!!!

"Did he fire six shots or only five?"....you've gotta ask yourself one question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya, pup?!

You cant kick a pit hard enough to hurt it.
Correct. :( I am 65 years old and a forever doggie lover. The only dog that ever posed a deadly serious threat to my health and well-being was a gosh-darned pit bull down in Florida. That dog would have killed me for certain if I had let it. But fortunately for me, I recognized the seriousness of the situation in time. It probably saved my life.

Where I live now, there are no big bad dog threats anywhere near that magnitude. But in my eventual retirement place? Who knows. If I have to carry a .357 snubbie around just to be able to walk my own doggies safely, that's fine with me.

The question is does your dog bite? The answer is he`s got teeth don't he?
I was once bitten by a gentle Schipperke who now lives with me- just shows you never know. I am proud the op showed such restraint, and is able to wonder what to do next.Is the trespassing female pretty and nice? That makes a big difference!

As others have said file a report ASPAP and whatever you do next time don't shoot, shovel and shut up, that's just asking for trouble. If it attacks you again by all means shoot to defend yourself but don't just "cap" it.

I also live "out" and have almost had to shoot at dogs twice and thankfully haven't had to yet. Another time my beagle mix started to growl and got another to keep on going.

Pits tend to get a bad rap but typically are very friendly dogs towards people unless abused but tend to not like other dogs.

As to what would have done. Just about the same as you but probably would have shot it after the first time of fending it off with your boot if not as it charged the first time.

If I were attacked by a dog big enough to do me harm I would not hesitate to kill it, especially if it happened on my side of the fence.

I don't know what state you are in, but some states will frown upon shooting a non aggressive dog on your property. If its attacking, that's a different story. Check the laws in your state before you get yourself in a real expensive jam. Just saying...
