Hello Folks,

While I'm waiting on the ATF to act on my C&R application, I've been looking for places where I might find the guns I want. I check here daily, follow Gun Broker, and sometimes look at Guns International (I think they have too high prices).

I'm interested in acquiring one or more "long action" Hand Ejectors. I'm specifically interested in guns that have good actions and clean rifling, but may have poor exterior finish and aftermarket grips. Whatever I get, I'm going to shoot it a lot, and I really don't care what it looks like if it shoots well.

Can you suggest some places where I can look for guns?

Thanks, Tom

Hi, good question! I have found the best values in places where there is minimal exposure. E.g. my local gun stores. Especially those stores that are high volume Glock dealerships.

One recommendation, try to stay away from Armslist.com. It is a cess pool of scam after scam.

Depending on where you live there are local (state and area) sites that might be useful. ARMSLIST is one which lists items by State/City. I have a friend who uses the local sites and has been pleased with several buys.

I prefer to handle the items before buying so mostly stick to LGS and other retail shops and gun shows. Given shipping and transfer fees these days I don't find many deals on auction sites to make them worth the cost and hassle if you're dissatisfied with an item. If you're looking for a specific hard to find item and don't really care about the cost, Registered Magnums maybe, auction sites are ok.

Let us know how that C&R works out. I see many sellers on the auction sites refuse to send to a C&R even though doing so is perfectly legal. Good luck.

Perhaps you are aware of this already, but if not........although it is not a dedicated firearms auction site, and depending upon where you live, auctionzip.com is a good way to find nearby auctions (both live and online) with items that may be of interest to you. You can specify the distance from your location, as well as specific search terms (firearms, guns, wesson, colt, etc.) and you will receive alerts to auctions in your area. They send daily email notifications. (If you wish to use your C&R license, it's always a good idea to check with the auction house beforehand to make sure they will honor it for transfers.)

Proxibid is a source of many weekly lists of "Local" auctions. The local auction lists their auction through Proxibid and I find probably 6 - 10 auctions a week with anywhere from 150 to up over 750 guns (and related) items for sale. I have bought from several, and so far I have been well pleased. You have to be careful, as not all have good pictures and descriptions. I get on the Proxibid and they send me weekly lists of all auctions that week. You will find your favorite's.

I have two local auctioneers that have 3 to 4 gun auctions a year, where I can go in person to bid. Look to your Local auctioneers, you may find some.

I would agree that Arms List is a very dangerous place to do business. Unless you want to meet face to face locally and feel alright about the phone conversation. Any interstate, or gun shipping situation are fraught with scams. I've have my pictures pirated and offered by scammer after I sold the gun. I've seen one form or another of this scam numerous time on Arms List, Buyer Beware!
I checked out River of guns and it shown numerous Arms List buys in states all over the country! Beware! Especially if it looks like a Really Good Deal!

I’ve done well both buying and selling on Armslist and Florida Gun Trader (your state most likely has it’s own version). I stick to local sales where I can handle and inspect the merchandise before buying. Always meet in a public place during the day after establishing a phone dialogue with the potential seller. If someone sounds even a little shady, I politely excuse myself from the deal. I just picked up a very nice Model 1026 earlier today at a most attractive price. If you want good deals on guns, you can’t just wait until they fall in your lap.

I can recommend JacktheDog website-top rated with over 11,000 positive reviews-been in business for 21 years-complete detailed photos-always seems to have great quality stuff-reasonable return policy....AND most of his auctions start at a penny with no reserve!!!

I would not buy anything off of armslist unless it was a face to face transfer at an FFL with an instant check thru the system.

I agree that you could try placing a WTB ad here on the forum with the specifics of what you are looking for. There probably isn't a larger group of S&W collectors anywhere on the planet.

I also agree that gun shows and your local gun shop or pawn shop are good places to frequent as there you can actually handle the guns and do a close up inspection.

I've had my C&R for quite a while and have been able to acquire several guns without having to use an FFL 01. Love it.

Not sure why some sellers will not accept this license as it adds a whole group of potential buyers to the pool. Their loss.

I admit to being lazy and in general practice I just look at GunBroker for guns. Surprisingly, I've been having some luck on eBay with parts and accessories. I just completed one repair and one build with this strategy, and if maybe I spent a little more on the initial purchases, it left me more time to work on the guns then take them out to shoot.

Tom,
Another website is Gunsamerica.com. I keep an eye on the estate sales in my area to see if they will have some firearms. Also, Cabelas and Bass Pro Shop sometimes have older handguns. Keep in mind that they'll ship a gun from a store in another state to a local store for a potential buyer.

Thank you everyone. I'll keep up the search, and when I get the nod from ATF I'll post a want ad as well.
