Auto Air Filters

Lately, I've often heard a sucking pop as I start my engine. Might that indicate a clogging air filter? Any other ideas?

The car is a Toyota Corolla, with about 172,000 miles on it.
I'm not sure when I last had the filter changed, but think it probably needs it.

I use a K&N on my 2000 Vette and it seems to work fine. Easy to remove and clean.

I have a Cadillac Escalade and it does have an air restriction meter built in. The factory filter was doing fine for about 40 K but then the gauge started moving closer to the red zone, so I replaced it with an Amsoil air filter. I use Amsoil products a lot, so that is where I ordered the air filter from, but more than likely, any major brand air filter would work perfectly fine. I place a great importance on OIL filters, but never really got exited about air filter technology. As long as he gauge reads good, your OK, or just keep an eye on it.

K&N claim better mileage as well as a proformance benefit, but I don't think I believe that with computer controlled engines. Engine breaths better, computer says, OK we need more fuel. With carburated engines, it probebly is true.

With the EFI engines... replacing the convoluted and restricted induction path helps a lot also.
