Auto or Revolver

To me a SHTF scenario implies a very bad situation with likely multiple targets or an army. I'll take a hi-cap auto that fires a nato caliber. Fight my way to a rifle.

I aint goin nowhere, just gonna sit with all the guns and ammo and goin to give them my ammo one round at a time. When I am empty and dead they can have what they want. I got too many to choose from and try to haul into the woods.

Perhaps it is because of where I live, but when I think of these scenarios, I'm often in the wilderness.. perhaps avoiding the general population. In that environment.. the dirty gritty out doors.. no question I'd take a revolver.

If I were strolling down the streets of a town, protecting myself from looters and other crazies, then a semi auto.

If I didn't know which scenario I'd be in.. revolver.

If the SHTF and I was told I could only take one revolver or one bottom feeder . . . I'd take my S&W M&P15 (AR-15)!

PS: To answer fairly . . . when something goes bump in the night around my humble abode, I generally grab my chopped barrel S&W 25-2 . . . in preference to a couple of 1911s.

It is a better up-close-and-personal "fighting" handgun in a dark house . . . sharpened edges on the front sight of a shorter barrel that's hard for a BG to grab anyway . . . and lots of weight in a compact size if you have to use it as a club!

Ruger GP-100 in .357. Its built like a Mack truck and if you run out of ammo, it would make a great club.

The problem is not so much caliber as gun. 44mag is 8 3/8 The 460 is 7 1/2 PC and the 500 is a 10 5/8 or so PC.

Still need to find a nice packable wheelgun

Its tough to decide. If I was going back in time and going to join a wagon train west in 1849, it would be my model 29. Might run into a grizz and need the power, or keep a indian band out of arrow range.
Shove my butt in a room of hostiles and I want my 1911 in one hand and a fistfull of magazines in my other.
If I am circulateing on the street and wanting to go concealed, probley my 66-3 3".
Now if its more rural and traveling the boonies, I think my 4" 24-3, that would be over my 5" 29 because its more portable and I wont be running into a grizz.
I have aproximently 30 fine handguns, and belive I could make a good case for at least 20 of them!

84cj, If I had no guns, know what I know, I would be looking hard for a mountain gun in .44 mag! My 24-3 will do just about 95 % of what one will do in the real world, and still be a ounce or two lighter. If I didnt already have a 5" 29, I would be looking for one too!

I have a 4 inch Python I like a whole lot. It even makes me a pretty good shot, bullets go where I want them to...so I'd have to pick that one.

If the SHTF I would stay home.I tried to live off the land before,I would starve. If I had to head for the hills it would be my Glock 45acp and a .22 LR.Some of the .22 ammo is very quite.Shoot small game with out drawing attension to my self. But then again at my age some days I have a hard time making it to the mail box.

Although I really like revolvers, I would take my Glock. The weapon can be field stripped (for cleaning ) and put back togeather in a matter of seconds. The amount of rounds per magazine and past performance record speaks for itself.

Pistols have to many moving parts, revolver all the way. All you need on a revolver to work is the hammer & spring and the cylinder lock.

Although I prefer revolvers. In that case I would go with a 1911A1. Provided it was a 'Govt.' type. (i.e. loose clearances)

Very little to go wrong. Needs minimal cleaning/lube. And (the big thing) can be slammed around without damage.

I would have to say a revolver, either a Model 66 or one of my Ruger old model Vaqueros in 45LC.
