Autographs and Signature collecting

I've got Elmer Keith as well as Bill Jordan's signed books.

Have a couple of great photographs with Gen Chuck Yeager along with his autographed book. The one photo of he and my wife laughing it up is really nice.

Have another photo of me and G. Gordon Liddy. Taken at Sturgis years back. that's a funny one as he and I chatted for some time about LE work, Montana and Dan Dennehy custom knives.

But my most treasured autograph is Sean Connery's from the set of "The Untouchables" from the Canadian bridge scenes, filmed near Hardy Creek, MT. Have a shot of me with the major cast members, autographed and framed; Connery, Charlie Martin Smith, Andy Garcia and Kevin Costner.

And if you recall the geeky 2nd LT from Clint Eastwood's "Heartbreak Ridge"? That is Boyd Gaines a very talented actor who has done mostly live plays. And has won one or two Tony awards. He is married to the daughter of a friend of my wife's. We have a press photo signed when he won one of his Tony's. Very talented and friendly guy. Told me some good stories about Eastwood too. LOL.

I have had chances to get autographs several times but simply didn't want to be one of the folks bothering some poor celebrity, especially if they were with a family member or child.

I only have one. A friend of my Dad's gave me one he'd gotten in Las Vegas. Signed by Joe Louis

Speaking of Joe Lewis. I once had a signed photo of a giant German gent he once fought--and beat--who in which--later became life long friends of Lewis and his family. This German, paid for Lewis's funeral as his faily was all but broke at the time. Can you name the German gents name? :-)) Clue--he was forced to serve as a Luftwaffe paratrooper in WWII. His initials are: M.S.

At the time I got his autograph, he was an owner of the Coca Cola company in Germany till his passing.

As said elsewhere I worked as a lockheed guard and a universal studio guard. I was around many actors and famous test pilots. I never asked for a autograph and knew many to talk to. Some other co workers would. I might have been dumb not to. I had a guard friend that would buy small flags, get a test pilot that was flying one of our planes on a record speed or altitude run and give him a small flag to take along. Then he would get the pilot to pose with the plane for a picture and get him to sign it and make up "a kit". Usualy we would often be given publicity photos anyway but he would take pains to get the pilots to sign them. I never did. I wonder how much the SR-71 worlds speed and altitude record signed photo of pilot and plane with a little flag that was flown when the record was made would go for today? Gee, I was dumb! RP, how much did you get?

I have a signed photo of Mickey Mantle , a signed record album by Roy Orbison and a book signed by Tom Landry , my collection is perfect .

I still remember where I was at, where I was going and why--when I heard over the radio that Schmelling had passed away. Sarge Bill and I were on our way to eat lunch at Longhorn Steak and Ale on Alameda Str in Corpus. This was the only time I ever saw Sarge get depressed over someones passing--outside of family or good friend. He had actually met Schmelling and became friends with him.

Max Schmelming and Jack Dempsey were my boyhood heros. Here are the two together. They could pass for brothers, dont you think?

Heh heh, before i fully read your post--that was exactly what I was going to say. Im a Dempsey fan too--seeing old newsreel footage of a few of his fights. Ill bet he could have easily beat Muhhamad ali.

I read where dempsey was a old man and ran his famous bar restaurant in New York two muggers grabbed him and he cold cocked them! In 1961 I worked at Grand Teton National Park and in Jackson there was a very old man that ran a photography studio. At the time he looked like 80 years old to me, but I was 20. He claimed to have trained or managed Jack Dempseys older brother that also was named Jack. It seems Dempsey used his older brothers name Jack that probley had already quit boxing when Jack the younger started out. Anyway, thats what the old man told me 53 years ago. I also remember the old man saying Jack would have thought he was on a sunday picnic if he was fighting the present champions. (Patterson?)
