The best I can tell, with some minor differences, the Model 65 is the stainless equivalent of the Model 13. Is the Model 65 in the 3" configuration more common than the Model 13 in the 3" configuration? Specifically with the heavy barrel?
Thanks,
Gonzo

The Model 15 is blued with adjustable sights. The Model 65 is the stainless version of the fixed-sights 13. I have no idea which is more common in 3" length, sorry.

Model 15 is .38 caliber and has adjustable sights. Model 13 is .357 caliber and has fixed sights. I have never seen a model 15 in 3 inch but it is possible.

The 15 is not the stainless equivalent of the 13. The 15 is the blue equivalent of the 67. The 13 is the blue equivalent of the 65. The 10 is the blue equivalent of the 64.

Sorry, guys, I meant to type 65 and just had 15 in my head for some reason. My question actually referred to the Model 65 vs the Model 13.
Thanks,
Gonzo

In my experience, the 3" 65s seem to be offered for sale more frequently than the 13s.
Then there are 65s with both shrouded and unshrouded ejectors.
Of these, the unshrouded ones seem to be the more common of the breed.

Kinda hard to answer the question since they were regular issue LE gun. The FBI had 3" 13's and many other agencies had 13's, 64's and 65's in 3".

I have always gotten the impression that the Model 13 was more desirable or sought after, and I just sort of assumed it was due to a lesser availability.

I don't know actual numbers, but I think I see many more 65's than 13's.

A buddy of mine has a 3" 13 that he has polished the end of the muzzle down to bare metal. Sure makes the buisness end of the weapon look big when it's pointed at you. Was a fairly common cop thing back in the day.

Finding a 3" Model 13 is no easy task, I have been looking for an affordable one in decent shape for a couple of years. The last one I saw on GB sold for $865...

I suspect by the time the 3" barrel K frame .357s were produced more departments opted for stainless over blue, so more 65s were made than 13s. Prices have gone through the roof for either now.

The 3.0 inch barrel Model 13 had been on my Grail Gun list for many years, and the Model 65 with the same barrel length was a close second. Unfortunately, I could never find either at an affordable price. Then, about 3 years ago, I found the Model 64-3 at a LGS at an affordable price. No, it wasn't a .357 Magnum, and it also wasn't either a Model 13 or Model 65, but I figured it was close enough, so I bought it and thought that I could check the Model 13/65 with 3.0 inch barrel off of the Grail Gun list. Believe it or not, later that year, I found the Model 13-3 at a gun show and traded a Model 4006 for it. Then, at Christmas time in the same year, I bought the 3.0 inch barrel Model 65-3 at a good price from a fellow Forum member. I really like my K-frame collection. I wish I could add a fiber optic front sight to all of them and not just the Model 64 (shameless plug for my great Shoo boy Hammer!).

Best of luck,

Dave

I agree that the 3" 65 seems to be more available and easier to find than the 13. I don't know which was produced in greater numbers.

When I acquired my 4" 13-1 a while back I did some research, and while I can't find the article I recall reading that many of the FBI 3" 13's were destroyed when they went to the semi's. Perhaps this is why there is an apparent shortage of 3" 13's as compared to the 3" 65's?

Ah yes. Another case of our Federal Government protecting us from ourselves.

Could be. Along with 686 CS-1s, and FBI 1076s, and military 1911s/M-14s/.38 M & Ps and...:(

Finding a M13 anywhere is an adventure. I was lucky to find a 13-1 a while ago in pristine condition for $450. And honestly, the inch difference, really isn't any.
