Hi Guys; new member only own autos; but have a itch to get a quality revolver; hopeing for a 686p / 4" / performance center super tuned; I've seen this model #178029 on several youtube videos; I can't find a place to purchase one or where they still are available; any info appreciated. I also read quit a bit about barrel/frame misalignment/canted to one side; what's the odds I'll get one like this and would sending it back to factory rectify it. thanks John

First of all, welcome to the forum. Lots of good info and people here.

The 686 and its blue brother the 586 are excellent revolvers. I'm sure someone else will know for sure, but I don't think there are any current production 686's coming out of the performance center. They 627 8 shot is available through the performance center. I own a 686 SSR from the Pro Series. If you are looking for that one particular model, you could place a want add on this forum, and look at all the auction sites. New production L frames seem to be notorious for canted barrels. My SSR had it. I did have to send it back twice but it was eventually fixed. Many around here believe that older production revolvers, pre MIM pre lock etc, are the better revolvers. Any 686 is a good gun, but most enthusiasts agree the 686 no dash and 686-4 are the best. Hope this helps

686p 3" or 4"

I was wondering if Talo 3" unflutted and Talo 3" deluxe would have performance tuned trigger actions and forged parts also fewer mim-parts? After watching Hitchcock-45 / youtube do some pretty acurate shooting, including reaching out 230 yds. I'm considering the 3" over the 4" abit easier to carry also. John

I am running a 3" Talos 3-5-7. Nice gun. HEAVY. Grips took some getting used to but I love them now.

Other than the unfluted cyl and grips, I am pretty sure they are a bone stock 686+. The trigger pull has nothing on my N frame 27 with the target package.

I think those came from Davidsons they still have it listed but showing 0 on hand. If they are the same as the other models they sold that were "Super Tuned" by the PC they won't have any special markings or Performance Center on the gun, just a little card in the box and the 178029 on the label.

I have the 686 Talo 3" it is a great gun but like said earlier it is a base 686 with a nice set of grip (even though I don't like them) and an unfluted cylinder. I carried mine for a year, but I just got a 686 with a 2" barrel and i'm in the process of decking it out. I just sent it to TK custom for moon clips:D. If you have your heart set on a PC smith good luck finding a 686. The closest thing is the 627, my good buddy owns one and I shot it a lot but it is an N frame and I think it is a little blocky I like the L frame 686. Also the over/under torqued barrel is a real problem with barrels 3" and under, my new one was over torqued, but smith is taking care of it as well as tuning the action. The talo is a great gun out of the box and for the price that is what I would start out with.

When I went to the Dayton Ohio gun show all the time I done a trigger job for $50 bucks and a match trigger for $175. I installed bearings stoned the edges and polished the surfaces that needed it. If you shoot double action and used Federal Primers I can put you in the 5lb range on double action. Word from the wise, A gun like the above can get you or others around you killed, a two year old can pull that trigger easy. I was very picky who I done one for. A PC revolver will be the same as they have for sale.

Welcome to the forum!

Just keep looking. You'll eventually find exactly what you're looking for. I've had my eye out for a couple specific S&Ws for awhile. It gives me something to do!

I would say also that; like any 'type' of gun, what you thought you'd like might not turn out to be what you ACTUALLY like. So take a chance, get something that's close to what you're looking for. If you change your mind, with S&W revolvers you can generally recoup your investment with no problem if/when you change your mind.

But be careful, they're addictive...

Again, welcome.

As much as I don't care for the newer 686s with their MIM triggers and hammers plus the LOCK, my dealer had several 6", 4" and even a 3". Looking at several I have to admit they all had great actions right out of the box. All were perfectly timed and very smooth, so nice if I owned one I'd never even consider an action job. I was very impressed with the current 686 actions right out of the box, and I looked at 7 examples.
Also none had a canted barrel so S&W must be paying attention.
