After having sold all my revolver's to go on a Smith auto binge, I decided I'd missed having a revolver around.

Been carrying a Smith 1076 as a woods gun, but got the urge to have a Smith 44 back in a holster.

I previously had both a 329PD and a 5" 629 and was looking for either one of those, or a 3" trail boss the local shop had.

I came across a 629 4" mountain gun, with the box, in great shape, the 1993 version (product code 103653) and decided to pick it up.

Now to find a good holster.

And as a thought, any value to having it mag-na-ported? The trail boss at the shop is ported, but does have the IL, so I picked the Mountain gun as it does not. Figured the tapered barrel would compensate for the 1 additional inch.

Now that I'm back in the revolver business, I'll start montoring the revolver section of the forum. (Now double the excuse to be online!)

Next on target is a 686.

Oh yes- I know forum folks like pictures, so here it is:

What a good way to get back into the revolver fold. Love the look of the shrouded tapered barrels.

Nice gun. IMHO the best configeration out there. I wouldnt port it. I have a 5" 29-2 and my sweetheart is a .44 special Model 24-3 in your configueration.

Nice roscoe! I love the black powder scallop on the cylinder!

Now, as to porting...

Shoot it first, see what you think. I found Mag-Na-Porting to be beneficial for a 3" 629, but many do not like it and some say it's ineffective compared to Smith's own PowerPorting.

That's a great piece! May I recommend the Lyman 429244 mould for a 265g GCSWC over 22g of W296. You'll find this to be a powerful and controllable hunting round for the largest game in the lower 48.

I will never port another gun. Magnum revolvers bark enough, without directing more nasty blast back in the direction of one's ears. When carrying a field gun, do you pack earplugs and put them in just before you shoot a deer, etc? Save what hearing you have.

I've had two magnaported guns that a previous owner had done--I have since sold them both. I would never pay money to have extra holes put into the barrel. It really doesn't improve recoil reduction all that much.
