Back Roads

Doesn't always work, only ticket my daughter ever got was on the back road going to college. But she had valid license.

Where I'm from those small streets that go across town are called rat runs. Using them instead of the main streets is rat running. To discourage rat running in the UK there are a variety of tools including speed bumps and deliberately narrowing some sections to slow the traffic. The idea is to convince the rat runners that their special route is no longer any quicker than the way the city wants you to go. I've just had a refresher on all this having just been to the UK.

When all else fails the local authority will divide a street in half so there can be no through traffic. The guys that drive trash trucks just love that.

If you live in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area, shortly after you find a nice back road, it is immediately re-built as a multi-lane thoroughfare studded with traffic signals. In the near future, the only back roads near DFW will all be in Oklahoma.

I drove my father home from Baltimore to near Chestertown Md on the Eastern shore. I was 14. He was kinda blitzed. We had been selling fish in every bar in s Balto. No market for fish and he needed the money. He sold over 600 pounds. When we got home he was in worse trouble with my mother than if the cops got him. And yeah I normally drove back roads round home. I had a 49 Studebaker and a AC WD 45 tractor

I like backroads when riding my bicycle. Yesterday 15 miles on gravel roads, met three vehicles and was passed by none.

There is nothing but back roads for over 100 miles in any direction from where I live.

Last week I drove 210 miles in under 3 hours by "back roads". But, in this case it was the shortest and best route by a long ways. I left town and traveling around 77-78 mph and passed 3 cars, in the first 30 miles before coming to the first stop sign. Then, I past 4 more, in the next 80 miles before turning south at the corner of a town of 600. No stop sign there though. In the next 80 miles, heading south, I past 2 swathers (used to cut hay) and 1 cement truck before entering my home town and stopping at the 2nd stop sign since leaving the town I live in now. I did have to stop a 2 stop signs and obey one traffic light before getting out of town when I started. I only bumped off the cruise control about 5 times total once I hit the road. I may have met 30 cars, one of which was an HP who didn't even glance at me as we blew by each other in the middle of nowhere.
