As we have a extremely diverse and knowledgeable group of people on here I have a question.

What company/s makes the small cameras that are being installed on many new cars/trucks for backing up purposes? I do not need the companies that install but looking for the manufacture of the cameras.

Stopped off at two car dealerships neither the parts dept or sales manager has that info nor does a electronics install shop.
How about it S&W people any one got a answer?

Try stopping at a Best Buy and look at the ones they offer. Jeep also has it as a dealer installed option on some of their Patriot or Liberty models. Its just a camera for the back end, wiring to bring the signal forward, and then a replacement mirror that has the solid state monitor for your viewing pleasure.

The Army has always had the solution to the "back-up" problem:

we call them "ground guides" -- a private or specialist who gets behind your vehicle and gives you helpful directions:

" 'Mon back, 'Mon back" - i.e. keep on backing up.

"Holy ****, sir, stop before you back up over that land mine"

No special wiring needed:D

Backup cameras are so much simpler then turning your head around. How did we ever get along without them? Besides, who can you impress by saying "my car has a rear view mirror!?"

What with cell phones and texting, backup cameras may be a great lifesaver, since practically no one has their mind on driving anymore.

Although I don't have one (yet) I think one would be great when you're angle parked and a van is parked to your right. These cameras are wide angle and let you see if anything is coming before you can back out far enough to see for yourself.
Being able to see the trailer hitch would be pretty wonderful too,

I learned from my father who is a truck driver that those two little things on the doors called mirrors can be rather useful and that one in the middle of the windshield works too. I just think that the technology is making us so lazy that we just don't want to do anything ourselves anymore. Back up cameras, cars that parallel park, cars that brake themselves, collision alarms (that job used to be occupied by the wife saying "You're too close!) what's next? I am all for stuff to keep people from getting into accidents, but how lazy do we have to get? What if you take someone from one of those gadget mobiles and stick them in my jeep which still has a tape player or my old truck with just an AM/FM radio and roll up windows? They will be lost.

I have a factory back up camera and sensors in my F150 and love it. The cap blocks the view and the lift gate is so tall that you can't see where you're at or what's back there.

Thanks guys, I hold a CDL and done my fair share of driving big stuff with mirrors.

As the government is forcing those devices to be installed in more and more vehicles, I'm looking into as for possible financial gain. Want to see if it will be worthwhile picking up some stock in the companies that make those cameras.

I'm waiting for the Head-Down iPhone display.

It operates using bluetooth with cameras at the front and rear of your vehicle. When texting while driving, half of the iPhone display will be dedicated to either front or rear cameras (depending if the vehicle is in Drive or Reverse). With the Head-Down iPhone display, a person will be able to text while driving for the entire trip without ever having to look up to see where they're driving.

my wife's new car has one in it. shows up on the nav screen when car is in reverse. i can't used to looking ahead at a screen when i am backing up.

Can you see your hitch ball in the side mirrors?
I can't.

Can you see your hitch ball when you turn your head and look out the rear window?
I can't.

So all the snippy replies aside, most of the parts stores here in town carry them.

I can't.
Depends on where you put the hitch ball. ;)

This guy can-

I call Photoshop on the geek-neck.:eek::eek: Al least I hope so.

The only time I could see using one is when trying to hook the boat trailer to the truck by myself.

And they do a great job doing that! That hitch is directly over the ball, with no adjustments necessary. Amazing.

My wifes van has all those wonderful mirrors, rear windows, and our rickety old bodies are still able to turn and look to the rear without too much pain and suffering. How many times have you read about somebody backing over a toddler in their driveway?...Walmart sells a wide view wireless color camera that slips under the license plate bolts and sends a picture to a three inch color monitor that can be dash mounted, visor mounted, etc.. In parking areas polluted with small children, it allows you to see all the blind spots that are just that..BLIND...whenever small children or pets wander into the fairly large blind spots behind ANY vehicle...not just vans. See how a little thought and common sense can overcome ignorance when child safety is involved?

I got my wife a car with a back-up camera and back-up warning beeper.

She had it a couple of months before she backed into something and put a dent in the lift gate, I asked if she heard the warning beeper - she heard it, but didn't know "what was making that noise!"

As for me - I like it.

I do not have power windows.
I do not have power locks.
I do not have automatic transmission.
In every car I've owned except this one, I've pulled the factory rear view and had a wink mirror installed (panoramic rear view mirror). The Mr. hesitated in case I decide to sell the car to someone who wants to activate the stupid BlondeStar service.

Really...someone who buys a 6 year old no frills model is going to want to activate that *&%@)%? Hahahaha! As if I'd sell my car! I wouldn't be able to find one without all the fancy mirrors and cameras and whatever. Especially one that has all three pedals it should have.

As to the original question, there are multiple makers. I'd ask where they sell the after market type. Odds are good that at least one or two of those companies is making them for Detroit (or Japan or Mexico city, or wherever they build cars now) Or send a general inquiry via the car manufacturer's website. Or ask the dealership...if they don't know they don't know and that's OK....but "I don't know" should ALWAYS be followed with "but we can find out. let's ask ____" They should have the means to find out for you, or find out how you can find out... and not doing so is inferior service IMO.

Thanks I already tried an aftermarket installer and a couple dealers; finding out who made the kits or where to buy is easy, finding the actual maker of the cameras not so easy. I will dig a little deeper

As for me I drove large truck and have a CDL and have been hooking up boat & other trailers for over 45 years and really do not want or need that camera system. If I can make a few bucks off of the companies stock now that's another thing. Simple math the more money I can take in the more guns and related items I can get.:D

Don't those kits come in a box? Or with install or warranty information? Any paperwork? Somewhere on the box (near the UPC code usually) or in the manual's fine print it should say where it's manufactured, and who makes it, or at least include a cust service phone number that you can call to find out.
