I posit that the reason the guy was arrested is that there was an old outstanding warrant out there for something-somethin glong forgotten but out there nonetheless. Suddenly this guy's name pops up with a current address on the computer. Couple that with a slow day and VOILA! In some squad room you hear "Hey Fred wanna go make an arrest to keep the rank off our butts???" I think it has nothing to do with an attempt to buy a firearm

I think the RK closest to me, that I know of, is over in Bvr Co., where the Mall is. I've never left a Walmart in a good mood! (Around PGH) I should get away from the city to where there's real people.
I think it was the Sheriff's Dept. that picked him up. This guy must be more popular than my friend let on or knows about. He said he knew him from school days.

Somewhat related, years ago when I had my shop we had an old guy who hung out at the shop and bought many guns from us. This was back in the days of the waiting period. Late 70s.
A couple days after we mail in an application for him to buy a handgun the local PD called and told us do not release the gun to this man. Like I said he had probably bought 20 guns off of us already.
We called the PD and asked about the hold explaining his previous purchases and he was a good guy retired etc. saw him every day.
The cop in charge of the checks said that being we knew him and the “issue” was back in the 40s he would approve the sale.
We asked Bob about it and embarrassedly told us that after he got out of the Army(WWII) he was a wild child and got involved with a woman. A married woman. One night the husband caught them in a bar, pulled a gun and shot Bob in the shoulder. Bob felt remorse for what he’d done and felt sorry for the husband and when the police showed up he refused to help out with their investigation.
I guess the local PD didn’t like being stone walled and noted it somewhere and 30 odd years later the right officer looked in the right place and BINGO!

In the pawn shop I work in here in Va., often times when a person is prohibited, before the computer actually shows denied, it shows delayed, and the state police often show up to question the purchaser and often times they have left cuffed in the police cruiser. Also when the court case comes up I have to go to court to testify that I saw the person fill out the forms and sign them.

This is my guess, too. I put a warrant in NCIC for a guy and about a week later got a call from the background check center that my boy was at the Big 5 trying to buy a shotgun. He was gone when I got there but they called him and said he had cleared the background and to come on in. Big surprise when he got there.
I helped the US Marshals sting a wanted felon like that when I had my store...They drove all the way from Beaumont to Conroe to nab him...I called the Sheriff also, and he helped by having a couple of detectives browsing the store (no problem finding volunteers for that assignment) in case he bailed before they arrived...The guy wet his pants when he was arrested and I had to mop up when they left...
He tried to rabbit when he got out the door and faceplanted himself in the parking lot...Proof that if you try to run cuffed behind your back, you'll only go to jail tired and bloody...

When I was my department's liaison to ATF I got a call regarding a citizen who had applied for a tax stamp to purchase a Class 3 weapon. The background check had turned up a 30 year old arrest (not conviction) for Larceny from a Building (theft of something other than merchandise). They asked me to interview the applicant. I agreed, but told the agent I didn't understand why it was an issue now since apparently it wasn't when they issued his FFL 10 years previously.

We had a gentleman apply to buy a handgun and a couple days later we got a call from the local PD to not under any circumstances (his words) release the gun. The potential buyer already had his CC permit and was carrying. Go figure.
The stores around here I know of have you do the 4473 on their computer AFTER you have made the purchase. There’s no “lets try it and see what happens”.
The WalMart here in my small IL town doesn’t even sell guns any longer. Across the river in MO is a different story though.
Regardless, if he took a conviction over it, I’d say SOMETHING happened. I didn’t know it was illegal to TRY to buy a gun unless maybe its a PA law.

The walmarts that still sell guns all use a computer system. The buyer fills out his info then the store employee checks it (mainly for wrong answers which can be an instant denial and to make sure the ID info matches) then a manager sends it into the National Instant Check system. Results will be an approval, a denial or a delay if there are any questions. Me guess is that something popped up that got the person delayed and further investigation showed something like an outstanding warrant that led to the arrest.
In the years when I worked full time in the gun business we had a few cases where they contacted us for the customers address........... Most likely to have local law enforcement go see them. Also had them call the store once for a sale that turned out to be our crew at the Dayton gun show. They contacted the Dayton so they could cops could look to see if the individual was still there........ The only really odd one was a case where the customer picked up the gun after ten days with no response (legally you can let them if you want) then got a call denying the sale. They actually told us to call the individual and he returned the gun to the store. Not like he had much choice the police would be visiting if he didn't bring it back in. We gave him the appeal info if he wanted to challenge it but never heard any more about it.
