Background checks are going to set a record

The increase in background checks is not necessarily from an increase in retail FFL sales. Part of the increase was the result of states passing universal background check laws. Depending on the state, the new laws do not just shove sales between private parties into FFL stores. Some require two background checks for the loan and return of a gun. Some new state laws require guns that formerly did not even require a federal 4473 form to go through the same paper work and record keeping as modern hand guns. I have no idea if it is the case or not but if someone was to claim that despite a reduction in FFL gun sales the number of background checks has increased due to compliance with new laws what do have to refute that?

One background check per every five households per year! Most impressive.

Oh, I'm batting well above that average. Which I think is a problem with using background checks as a statistic, there's no way to tell between distributed purchases (one gun a year), and well...me.

In the fine State of Georgia, I have a driver's license and carry permit. While the dealer is making copies of my driver's license and carry permit, I complete Form 4473, pay the bill and walk out the door with my new-to-me-gun. A NICS check is not done, at least at my dealer. I have found several good deals on S&W revolvers or 1911 semi-autos that I didn't even know I wanted. I got a early 1950's Mossberg 22 LR bolt gun as a "Frequent Shopper" good buy bonus.

And I said "no more guns" in 2019, if only my loving wife knew. She has more choices and options now.

The flip side of that is states like mine, Iowa, that require either a permit to purchase or a CC permit to purchase a handgun. One background check covers all firearms purchases for 5 years. And more and more people in my particular area are getting CC permits. The permits also eliminate the background checks on long guns. In one 30 day period this summer I purchased 8 guns, no background checks.

And there are sales among private individuals in the same state (but not in all states) that require no paperwork at all. Not sure how many states (like Texas) don't require a NICS report for dealer sales if you have a handgun carry permit. And that is a large number of Texans.

Crazed rhetoric gets the gun sales going.

You can also counteract that logic with the fact that one background check can be used for multiple gun purchases.

Same deal here in NC, as well as many other states. All you need is your valid Drivers license and CCP. This is one of the reasons many are getting or renewing their CCP's.

This may not fully explain the numbers, but I'd bet the farm it is a very large contributing factor. Up through the end of the second quarter at least, gun manufacturers were pretty much all reporting very depressed sales, and the ongoing list of rebates (to try to spur slow sales) doesn't seem to have slowed. I guess we'll see what they report for the third and fourth quarters.

Multiple gun purchases on one BGC, private sales requiring no BGC, and all the rest of it are just business as usual. Nothing has changed to indicate that any of those things are or would be any more of a factor now than what they have always been.

Universal BGC laws are something that HAS changed. There are more of these laws on the books and the law abiding follow them. We don't like it but we comply - because by definition we abide by the law, even though we disagree with it.

I'm sure all the noise by the leftists is driving some increase in sales, but nothing like we saw during the previous administration. Because right now it is all just noise - most of it from people who have zero chance of ever being able to implement any of what they want. Once it settles down to one or two top candidates and THEY start spouting off about their plans for restricting our rights further, THEN their rhetoric will really start becoming a driving factor. Just like when it looked like HRC would be victorious in the 2016 election.
