Somewhat drifty:
For all the holster time it saw, doesn't it seem like Barney's revolver was always in pristine conditon?
As a matter of fact, can anyone recall a tv detective, policeman, oh heck, even a bank robber / bad guy of any type, who had a worn looking gun? (We'll leave out Jed Clampett's flintlock rifle.)
Asa Breezy, bank guard in Mayberry. When Barney inspects his gun he asks about the green things and finds they are moldy bullets. I think the gun also fall apart.
Not entirely correct. They stopped allowing firearm sales several years ago but originally allowed gun sales.
At this time, they allow gun accessory sales, non firing gun sales and some antigue gun sales but not working guns. The powers to be at ebay are anti gun.
I checked and eBay stopped allowing gun sales in 1999.

i have a book about colt firearms here at home and it mentions that deputy barney fife used a colt official police revolver and a s&w model 10

I've got that bullet (or more properly "cartridge"). I often times thought about putting it up for sale or auction but in the end I wind up keeping it. It's banged up a bit from riding around in his pocket and there's a little green around the primer pocket. I thought about polishing it, but then I figure that the patina looked better so I now just keep it in a sock. It's a piece of TV history and I'm lucky to have it.

Final answer, it was a Taurus.
Well..That accounts for all the AD's.
