Hi,

Besides the do-it-yourself casting resin/hardwood blocks, is there a way to secure the barrel in a vice?

I already have the MGW frame wrench and L insert... but Im having a hard time with the casting resin mess!

A preformed delrin barrel block would be GREAT!

Im looking for something specifically for a 686 4".

Any help will be appreciated.

Cheers,

TD

Maybe try 2 wood blocks and 2 appropriately sized drill bits? Clamp the blocks together in the vise and drill at the seam; one hole for the barrel and 1 for the lug.

Barrel vise blocks for the 686 guns are easy. The full-length underlug and stainless finish means that all you need is two pieces of 2x4 fir or pine to clamp and hold the barrel. Drill or gouge out cavities if you wish, but even that is not necessary. The underlug prevents the barrel from slipping, and the stainless finish requires no protection to protect it from scuffing or peeling the finish off.

Just be very careful to orient the front sight so that when unscrewing the frame from the barrel, so that if the barrel turns, it doesn't bash into the vise frame or jaws.

The cast resin or shaped delrin barrel blocks are needed more for round or irregular barrels for the M10, M15, M19/M66, etc. The narrower the barrel or the more support you need at the underlug, the greater support you need for shaped barrel blocks.

Barrel torque is no more than some 12 or 15 lb-ft for virtually every S&W revolver barrel I've ever replaced. The exceptions may be for the X frames or shrouded barrels since I have never done one of those.
