Just thought I would share response I got from S&W regarding barrel break-in. Any other nubes out there like me getting overwhelmed with what to do or what not to do..

Email I sent:

Greeting,

Recently purchased an M&P10 rifle. I am new to AR platform of rifles so trying to do as much research as I can prior to heading to the range. Question I have is regarding barrel break-in...is it necessary with the M&P-10?
Have read what seems to be endless amount of articles ..some saying it should be done or accuracy will go out the door, other saying its a waste of time and can actually damage the barrel...

What I am referring is to the..
1 shot ..clean
2 shots..clean
5 shots..clean..etc..procedure

Is this recommended with the barrels installed on the M&P10 (mine is the non compliant version.. ie has pencil barrel w/ flash hider)

Looking for the manufactures recommendation for the M&P10 rifle..

Thanks,

Response:
Dear Customer,

there is no break in need with our barrels.

If further assistance is required please reply accordingly.

Sincerely,

Rob

It's not needed with a rimfire and I personally doubt it's benefits with a centerfire.
I do make it a point to try to not overheat the barrel on a centerfire rifle during a shooting session.
Over cleaning will certainly take it's toll on a barrel, especially the muzzle crown if not careful.
Make sure you get the optimum accuracy from your rifle by trying different brands of 22 and recording the accuracy from each. 22 rimfires are know to be ammo sensitive.
