Question, I have a 629-1 3 inch round butt and would like to change to a 6 inch or 8 inch barrel, what are my barrel choices ? is it complicated ? I would be using a gunsmith. I see them for sale but I would prefer some of the experts advice, thanks

You would first need the barrel you want , the extractor rod would be an issue, they vary on barrel lengths. So the center pin and rod would be an issue. After that , the new barrel would need the barrel-cylinder gap trimmed ( .004 would be perfect ) anfactory d the forcing cone may need to be deepened. A serious gunsmith if the could do all of this. Check Alan Tanaka in Gardena, CA. The factory used to offer this but who knows if they can pull this off now. Gun's and Gun Parts in West Springfield, Ma.
may have a barrel for you if you can not purchase direct from factory.

Good luck, KCOMP
Gardena, CA. he could do this.

Mine was originally a 3 inch barrel. I sent it to Smith Wesson to get a barrel changed. He said he had a 5 inch barrel that would balance better. And so it does. best move I ever did.

the results...

Short barrel Model 29's and 629's are highly desired, so you would be far better off selling your 3 inch Model 629-1 and buying one with the barrel length that suits you better. 6 inch and especially 8 3/8 inch barrel lengths are currently less desirable and as a result, sell for less than the 3 and 4 inch 44 Magnums.

Post it in the Classifieds as a "Trade Only" an I predict you'll get a response....or nine.

That would be a lot easier and cheaper than a barrel swap.

As the 3 inch barreled 629s are highly desirable, you might just want to buy the second 629 and then enjoy the two before selling the Shorty.

All the best of luck to you!
