Just bought a S&W 686 and was wondering what solvent you use for cleaning barrel and cylinder. I'm currently using Hoppes #9 and Kroil.

I use Hoppes #9. You can also use Butch's bore shine for copper fouling.

jb bore paste works well for a heavy build up of carbon and copper on a neglected gun, otherwise, what you are using is good.

Thanks for the input. I have used JB and Butch's In my 223 target rifle. After reading the back of the bottle of Butch's about health risk and what I've read on other forums I'm a little leary about using it. Your thoughts?

cleaners containing ammonia and other caustic chemicals disolve copper on contact and break down powder residue very well. avoid contact with grips or anything else around your work area. barnes cr-10 ia good but warns that it should not be left in the barrel too long. use common sense when handling the strong stuff.

My thought -- every darned thing on the planet is toxic to humans at extreme levels of exposure. Use such products in a ventilated area, wash your hands afterwards, forget about it.

I have been using acetone to clean my hands with for about 40 years, so I ain't afraid of no stinkin ammonia......
