Just received a new-to-me used 4506. Upon closer examination of the barrel crown, it appears that a rolled edge protrudes into the bore of the barrel, including the lands, and the grooves. What is the best method, short of a lathe, to remove this error? Thank you for any and all replies,
Don

A crown tool will clean it up, and shorten the barrel a touch. These can be used by hand available from Brownells.

The traditional way to clean up a wallowed muzzle is to counter bore it till you hit good rifling. The barrel remains full length, and the repair is only seen if one looks close. This is best done in a shop, though.

A muzzle burr like you are describing is likely to affect accuracy. Dont dismiss the importance of a perfectly finished muzzle because you have a handgun and not a benchrest rifle. Where the rifling stops at the muzzle is the last thing to touch the bullet and so it has the most affect on accuracy. Many new guns come from the factory lokking like a circus chimp crowned it with a countersink out of a wood shop. This is sad because often the difference between a fantastically accurate gun and a mediocre shooter is just that...the crown.
I like Brownell's and get alot of stuff from them but the do it yourself or "latheless" crowning tools they sell are not good. All you have to do is put that pilot in your bore dry one time to gunch up the rifling and ruin the barrel for good. The little pilot has to fit snug to work right and in so doing can damage the lands. Right now you can always turn back a muzzle to correct the crown but damaged rifling 1/4" down kills the barrel.
Proper crowning involves a barrel/action wrench, a good lathe, fast rpm and a sharp bit. Follow up with a brass muzzle lap and a borescope, all used in conjunction with a guy that knows what ta' hell he's doing of course. There are alot of things on a gun that can be half stepped and not be this big of a deal but the muzzle crown is absolutely not one of them. If you want the gun to shoot it's best send it out to the man or buy all of the above and give it a try...if you dont it might turn into just another gun you shoot once in a while that occasionally hits a can at 20 yards.

Thank you

each and all for your care of response, observations an suggestions. The abnomality was noticed upon close inspection after receiving the weapon, and prior to shooting it the first time.

It IS erratic in its grouping ability at any range when compared to my other 4506 which has a properly formed crown.

True, cosmetics don't always equate to inadequate performance. Just look at me. I'm living proof that ugliness can be deceiving! :D

Guess it'll need a trip to the crown-doctor!
