Barrel length on snubbies

I wonder if there is some reason, other than aesthetics, for why S&W makes the barrel length on some snubbies as 2.1 inches (like my 640) and others its 1.875 inches (like my 642). Its not much difference but I thought there must be a reason for it or they would make all of the j-frame snub nosed guns the same length.

The j magnums have a longer barrel. They need as long as a barrel as they can get to make the 357 worth it, so I guess s&w thought adding that little bit helped. Thats what I always figured anyway.

Also the matter of the longer Magnum case: a smidge (.25"?) more length to the ejector stroke helps to eject the fired Mag casings.
