Barrel marking on 1947 K-22

My K22 "LERK" K1787 has a small s on the barrel flat and a larger S on the left grip frame with no date stamp. My post war .38 special M&P S987XXX has the exact same markings in the same places. K38 "LERK" K4568 does not have an s in either place. I certainly enjoyed having a reason to look at all 3 revolvers, so thanks to the OP and all others for this thread!

Examined a few today:

M&P serial S 864439 shipped 12/46 no "S" stamp in barrel flat.

K-22 serial K 324, Has "S" stamp in barrel flat.

K-22 serial K 2684, shipped 08/47, Has "S" stamp in barrel flat.

K-22 serial K 18529, shipped 02/48, No "S" stamp in barrel flat (one line Made in USA stamp but non LERK).

K-22 serial K 75307 and up no "S" stamps in barrel flats.
On a side note all of my pre war bright blue K frames have the letter "b" stamped to the far left of their serial numbers on the barrel flat.
