Barrel Markings

Would you please tell me if the barrel markings on the 25-2 at the same for both .45 ACP and the .45 Colt? I was recently at a gun show and a dealer had a 25-2 on his table. The right side of the barrel said "45 Cal Model of 1955". While looking at it, the dealer told me it was chambered in .45 Colt. I didn't believe him and moved on. Is he correct? Were the right side barrel markings for the .45 ACP and .45 Colt the same?

For your first question, the answer is yes, then changed in later models .45 Colt CTG


Originally .45 ACP or 45 Auto Rim only.


Cylinder has a nominal length of 1.67 for .45 Colt and 1.53 for .45 ACP


I would suggest grabbing a copy of the "book" and carrying it with you...... and your calipers! :D

it is possible to fit a short .45 Colt cylinder to a Model 25-2, which is usually chambered in .45ACP.

The Model 25-5, chambered in .45 Colt, had a longer cylinder.

So, circa 1978, pretty sure it would have been marked .45 Colt by that point.

The "rings" in the chambers of this 25-2 are much closer to the front of the cylinder than the 45 acp cylinders I have owned or seen in the past. It looks like the chambers have been holding longer cases than the 45 acp.

The early barrels just say 45 cal. But the 25-2 were supposed to be 45acps.

The 25-3 was the first actual production 45 colt model. Those and the rare special order 45 colts before that had a short cylinder that would have been about .040 shorter than an acp cylinder due to the rear acp cylinder needing moon clip clearance. Or same length as a non recessed N frame 357 cylinder. The 25-5 and later used the same length cylinder as a non recessed 44 mag cylinders.

I would not buy it believing it rare without some kind of factory assurance like a letter. To Easy to fit a 45 colt cylinder to an acp gun. I have done it myself.
