Barrel Threading

I'm going to have my 15-22 barrel threaded. Am I correct in assuming it has to be removed from the rifle to have this done?

Depends on who you send it to. Belt_Fed threaded my 15-22 and others on this Forum. You can send him the complete upper no problem.

I was going to try to have it done locally.

To get it done correctly you would need the barrel removed but Id guess the gunsmith will do it for you. You want the threads cut on a lathe and NOT done with a die.

Then it would be best to call and ask what if anything they would charge if you don't remove the barrel yourself. ((( If you were just asking if the barrel has to be removed to do the work, yes it does ))) Be careful who you have do the work. It's not the same as simply threading a rod. The threads have to be cut centered to the bore to be done properly... and you can't count on the manufacture to have cut the bore center to the barrel. It's not critical if all you want to do is slap a flash hider on it, but if you ever want to put a can on your rifle... a baffle strike will ruin your day and the can.

I had my barrel removed today and threads repaired. Old threads were damaged and loose for silencer, so barrel was shortened 1 cm and new threads made.
While removing barrel i was thinking that why there are not replacement barrels yet? It is so easy change barrels and sometimes like to have long one and sometimes short.

I can remove the barrel myself. I'm not sure a local gunsmith would have the appropriate barrel wrench (which I *do* have).

Well, I thought I could remove the barrel from the upper... I have the handguard off, but I'm not too keen about forcing anything. How do I get it off the receiver? A hearty tug? A saw? Do I even need to remove it?

I thread quite a few barrels for suppressors and yes the barrel needs to be removed so it can be turned in a lathe.
If you know what your doing go ahead and remove it, otherwise just let the gunsmith do it.
You're going to want it threaded 1/2 X 28 which is the standard for flash hiders, muzzle breaks, and silencers for your caliber.

Ok. Glad you found someone. If your threading for a suppressor, you'll love it. Mine sounds like an electric staple gun with CCI Subsonics.

Nope, threading for a flash supressor/muzzle break in an attempt to tune the barrel.

Local gun store in San Antonio - Don's Guns. I disassembled the rifle and just took the barrel in.
