of course we all know Barry Sadler and the Ballad of the Green Berets. Came across that on line and had to give a listen. Then got to looking at Berry's life. Found that he was an author of a series of novels about a Roman soldier that could not die. Not great literature but I read the first one and enjoyed it and have started the second one. There are a bunch of books in the series and how they hold up remains to be seen. In my experience few authors can keep a long series going and keep them fresh and interesting.

Decent reads

I started reading Casca The Eternal Mercenary when it first came out. I was a young army sergeant stationed in Panama at the time. Barry Sadler being the author was part of the draw to give it a try. Though hardly high literature, I enjoyed it and read several of the follow-ups in the series before I moved on to other interests.

Thanks for the memories!

I'm recalling an interview that had been done with Robin Moore (from years ago - he died several years ago), author of "The Green Berets" book. Moore co-wrote the Ballad of the Green Berets song with Sadler and I was thinking he helped him with his books also.

The books through number 22, the Mongol, were written by Sadler. Then he died. Numbers 23 through 50 wherever they're at now have been written by other people, obviously. The two that I have read inhaled.

I read the whole series. Some better than others but all were a good read and all were more or less stand alone as he wrote about things in the past and into the future. The quality did go down toward the end but his children finished the one he was writing and a fresh set of minds brought it back to the high quality of the first 3 or 4.
