One of the greats on and off the field.
Sad to read this. I have long admired him. When I played football in HS, my bedroom wall was plastered with cut out SI pics of him and many others.

I think Bama has been producing star athletes since they first sewed some pig other.

Always thought he was a class act, and played quarterback in such a way as to bring out the best of those Green Bay teams during the Lombardi era - truly a team player and field general.
Lombardi knew how to get the best out of his personnel.
While he did play for Bama, I do not think the mid-50s teams for Bama were particularly great. I believe he played before Bear Bryant returned to coach.

It’s interesting looking at current players by school. ND, Penn ST, Nebraska, MI, Oklahoma are not even in the top 10.

Wow, predominantly Southern schools nowadays.
As for Bart Starr, he was my hero back when I was a kid. I still remember watching the Ice Bowl against the Cowboys. RIP Bart.

Starr was a great one, and a gentleman. It's almost impossible for me to grasp that he was eighty-five.
There's probably no truth to the rumor that Tittle is still playing somewhere. Really unlikely. But how old was he when he hung it up? Forty-six?

I remember watching that game. It lead to Jerry Kramer's book Instant Replay. Instant replay was new, and they showed his block that allowed to Bart Starr to score over and over.
He was such a leader off the field as well. He truly made a huge difference in the lives of so many young men that took a wrong turn in the long road we all need to walk. His involvement with Rawhide Boys Ranch not far from here, was nothing but stellar!

I heard about his stroke a couple years ago and was glad that he survived, but it sounds like he just gradually went down from that event to now. RIP.
